My situation is like this. I just sold my main computer that housed my 9700pro. Now my new P4 3ghz won't be here for at least another month so I will have no use for this card. Now my friend is building his computer and told me he would buy my card for 200$.

Should I... ? (remember I have no comp for it for at least another month)

1.) Sell it and use money a month or so from now on a new card?

2.) Keep it , it is not worth selling for 200$.

The card also has the Vantec Iceberg and ram sinks already on it.

9700 pro will run any current games beautifully so i see no reson in selling it. i would definately get rid of it for $250 though cuz that way you can get a 9800 NP/ 5900 NU

I'm going to break with the pack here and say sell it for $225, or $200 if you prefer. Then go out and upgrade for $25 or $50. That is not a bad deal.

Who would pay $250 for a used 9700 Pro when they could get a new 9800NP for around the same price (that's what I paid for mine anyway)? I say if you can get $200 to $250 sell it and grab a 9800NP or maybe a 9800Pro if they are in your price range when you're ready.

9700 Pro to 9800NP is not a big difference in my books,I would just keep it,get a better card down the road.Guys he said $200 not $250 ;).

Well I might be able to get 225$ for it. I am thinking I want to go with the XT line because of that overdrive feature. I am going to use that new cooler for the chip MCX159 so that the temps are super low and it will clock super high, then of course memory heatsinks. With door panel I have 2 80mm fans stacked blowing directly on the card at all times so I think the XT would benefit me, only problem is the XT line will only be 200$ or 500$ right.

I'd say take the $200-225 and hang onto the cash ... in a month's time, the XT will be available for $450 or less online - by that time u'll be lucky if any1 offers u $170 for the 9700pro

Edit: take a look at my Heat .... I know what I'm talking about when it comes to ATI video cards!

Hmmm... The auto-overclocking feature is really cool but is it worth it? Is the 9600XT faster than an overclocked 9800Pro? If it is then at $200 it's probably a great deal. If not then it's probably best to hold onto your current card because that $500 price tag on the 9800XT would scare me away.

When will the XT line come out and is the 9600XT really going to be faster from the info we have now? So really how do the cards stack up.

9700np
9700pro
9800np
9600xt
9800pro
9800XT

?????

Of course we have limited knowledge of the XT but what do you guys think?

A 9800 is about the same speed as a 9700P, so why sell for $200 only to buy essentially the same card for an extra $50 a month later? I don't think the XT will really lower prices on current cards much. Plus, your card is at 9800P speeds, so I wouldn't let it go for less than $250.

The auto-OCing feature of the XT cards seems really useless right now. I mean, the max an ATi 9800XT is currently allowed by the 3.8's to go is 432MHz, a 5% OC. That's just not a big deal. Maybe the 9600XT will clock higher, and I'm interested in that, but it will be much slower than your 9700P@9800P speeds. You could wait for AT's mid-range roundup, coming this week and including a 9600XT, to see how it compares to a 9700 if you're interested in the XT's bundled copy of HL2. But if speed is your concern, your 9700P should be good for a while longer. I'd hold onto it until next spring, and sell it before the NV40 or R420 are announced, to maximize its resell value. Then you'll have to bide your time for a few weeks until you can pony up for an NV40 or R420, which I expect to be much faster than the current top end. Or you could buy a 9800XT, which will be a small upgrade over your 9700P@9800P speeds but hopefully will have considerably dropped in price by then.

A 9600XT should be nowhere near as fast as a 9800, judging by specs alone. 9600P < 9600XT < 9700 < 9700P ~= 9800 < 9800P < 9800XT.

Lets say you sell the 9700P and place the $ in the bank for a month. Mid Nov rolls by and here are your opcions. Get a
9700NP/9600XT for the same $, and get about 10 to 15 percent LESS performance, you can add 16% ($33) more $ and get the same card for a 0% increase in performance, you can also add 25% ($50) more $ for a 9800NP and again get basically 0% increase in performance. You can always add 50% ($100) more $ and get the 9800PRO for a 5 to 10 percent increase in performance. OR you can add 100% ($200) more $ and get a 9800XT for a 20 to 25 percent increase in performance. You have a hard decision to make... NOT.

Keep the card, and give it a month vacation before putting it back to work :)

HAHAHAHAH you guys are great. Thank you for your help. From what I have read elsewhere the upgrade is not really worth the extra money till a new line comes out like the R420. Thanks for the help. Well I will let my friend use it for the next month(not overclocked) and I can have more time to look at the market and prices. Thanks guys you rock.
