Should I rent a cable modem for $15 per month?

My room mates and I would like to get internet access. The only company we can get it from is Cox. The problem is we need a cable modem. I already have a router... You can rent one for $15 per month or buy one from them for $70. Is either of these worth it? What should I do?

It is much cheaper to own your own, do the numbers and answer your own question. You can buy one for less thatn $70.00

Check out places like Best Buy, you can buy the modem from them and if you sign up through them you can typically get the whole cost of the modem back as a rebate.

or eBay a cable modem for $20-50

My DSL provider switched preferred modems because a newer one was giving better performance. When I was having problems they told me if I wanted one I had to pay $200 for it. Screw that, I went to eBay and bought the same model for $15.

Check out dslreports.com, go to the Cox forum and find out what modems Cox uses, then go buy one on your own.

Wow! $15 a month?! I bought my own because adelphia was charging $5 a month. 15 is a total ripoff.

Yeah, $15 sounded like a ripoff. I just picked up a Motorola Surfboard cable modem today. I'll get service this saturday.
