Don't do it. When you take the IHS off, the top of the chip is significantly lower and you probably won't get a standard heatsink to make contact with it while in the socket. Also, replacing the IHS using AS5 gained me nothing... and actually lessened my overclock.

If you want to risk a chip for a few deg drop, your choice. I would not.

wow talk about stupidity at its finest....do you mouth off in real life too, not asking one ounce of questions for your rationale.

before: 2.9GHz @1.44-1.46V on water (Swiftech standard kit) -> 46C-48C
after: 2.9GHz @1.36-1.39V on air (TT BT) -> 39-41C

would i sacrifice a $200 chip, so that i can run cooler at lower voltage, with less noise and complexity on air extending its life for a $2 razor blade.../rolleyes

I have NEVER heard of a difference that significant.

You will not get a very big difference unless your IHS isnt on properly. Only do it if you are getting very high temps that are interefering with your overclock and even then you might want to look into a different solution. Get a dead chip to practice on if you must do it. But again I will say that in your situation you are probably wasting your time.

To get 46-48C with water isn't very impressive. To go from a poor watercooling system to low voltage and removing the IHS should explain the significant drop in temperatures.

I did it to my k6-2, and was able to pick up 7 more fps in Minesweeper with the additional overclock. You should try it.

I'd see what you can get with the IHS on first. If its a decent OC then stick with that...

I would definatly not do it, it's a pain to get it off, and not really worth it. I did it with one of my old northwoods to see if it would make any major differance, and dropped my temps by like 2c. But with the IHS off, the core is exposed, and if you put too much pressure on the heatsink, you could crush the die.

I would only really remove the IHS if your using water or some other extream cooling system. Take the Swiftech Storm for example. That thing seems to shine when you remove the IHS. But it's probably one of the few examples that it actually matters (or is worth it) to remove the IHS.

(and yes, I have the storm and removed the IHS. I cut my thumbs 5 times doing it too :|)

Just lap the IHS and expose the copper. It's alot harder to screw the chip up and it will give you a few degrees difference. I did it to my 3200+, but I think I will wait a little while before I do it to my X2 4400+.
