New to BluRay..is the PS3 still the best way to go for music and photos as well? USB 2.0 functionality for thumb drives or external hard drives?

JC

Does the PS3 play DRM free mp3s and music files?

I think you answered your own question. I don't think the PS3 will work with external hard drives though, because I've seen many post about replacing the existing drive.

The PS3 most certainly works with external hard drives. I've used them myself.

All BR-D players that I know of will upscale DVDs to 1080p.

The LG line of BD players can handle photos through a flash drive and the new one Netflix, too. Of course they will all upscale.

Will the PS3 use both disk for games & demos with an external?

No. An external drive can be used for movies, photos, music, and for backing up game files.

The internal drive is a standard 2.5" SATA laptop drive, so you can replace it with a 320 GB for $90 or a 500 GB for $150. Sony gives directions in their manual and this does not void your warranty.

Thanks! I knew you could replace the internal drive, and after reading your post, I now see why people just replace the internal drive. I'll continue to use my USB drive, or the SD card in my camera.

Until netflix comes to the PS3, the 80GB that I have will do me fine.

Most expensive PS3 = $399
Cheapest PS3 = $399

You can still however sign up for the Sony CC to get $100 off your PS3 purchase, which brings the price down to $299.

To those getting a PS3, Walmart has a pretty sweet deal this week. They have a bundle for $468 that includes the new 80GB PS3, your choice of Blu-ray movie, your choice of PS3 game, the Blu-ray remote, and a $75 Walmart gift card.

Is this better than the Sony 150 off deal? Debating whether or not I should refuse delivery of the Oppo I ordered for 170.00 and get a PS3 for a little bit more?

I wanted to simplify playing music showing photos etc...does PS3 play mp3s without DRM?

I didn't click on the $150 off deal posted, but this one allows you to buy it pretty much anywhere. You might want to call them after they say you are accepted to see if they can rush the card to you.

The 2 deals together makes this hotter than meeting Ms. Alba. At least you have a chance with this.:p

I wonder how fast you can get the card? Also, how do they credit the account? And what is considered an Authorized Sony dealer? Have you done this?

Thanks for information...

PS3 fan is quite audible, if that's an issue for you (not whiny, just fairly loud turbulance).

They have a list of stores & websites listed, but Im not at home, so I can't give you the link.
All major stores, like Walmart, are ok. When I did it back in the summer, I had the card in 2 days.
YMMV, because it took weeks before a pal got his.

which model PS3 do you have?
I have a 60gb launch model, and apparently there were two different heating assemblies for that unit, depending if it was made in China or Japan. Cannot remember which, but one had a 15-blade fan on the assembly, and the other had an 18-fan blade, iirc. And if I remember, I have the Chinese-made model, which is apparently louder. And yes, I can hear it whenever I'm listening at low volume and its in a warm room, but the only time I've ever heard it is when its in my room at my house, but not here when I'm at school.
So if its a warm environment, just play louder. It won't be obnoxiously loud to the point that it'll be heard if you have the volume at a moderate or higher volume like I always do. :)

Old models w/ 90nm core is loud. New models w/ 65nm core is near silent. The 80GB core white box PS3 you see at B&M right now is the 65nm core model and it's near silent, even after running Folding@Home overnight in an entertainment center enclosure.

Here's a list of authorized online dealers. I had my credit before I got my first bill. Sadly, it was only for $100 off back in the summer.

Here's a link to a thread on the Walmart bundle. It's not quite a good as I was told, as the movies & games you can pick from is limited. It's still hot though.

I have 60 GB model and it's fan is fairly loud (turbulance, not whine), at idle and under load.

Not outrageous, but still pretty loud even from across the room.
