Should I refund him the shipping cost?

I am selling a DSL Modem that I can't use on eBay.
The modem is brand new, and it works on my Verizon DSL line.
One buyer purchased the modem from me, and 2 weeks later, he said the modem is not working with his ISP (BellSouth). and he want me to refund everything within a week otherwise, he is going to report me on paypal. FTW, I don't even have the modem yet.
Anyway, after exchange some emails later, He agree to send me the modem back first, and if the modem is bad, then I refund him the entire cost + shipping. and if the modem is working with my Verizon line, then I can't refund him the shipping cost.

now, I got the modem and it works just like how it suppose to work. so I refund him the money without any re-stocking fee, and he wants me to re-fund him the shipping too. WTF..
I look back at his feed-back, and he is totally new on eBay.

So should I risk of him put a negative feedback or just refund him the shipping and get rid of him?

I wouldn't have refunded him anything.

He obviously just bought a DSL modem thinking it would work with his connection and didn't bother to do any research.

Now he expects you to pick up the tab for it.

I would not have refunded him at all until I was able to see if the modem was dead or not. It is buyer beware and he obviously purchased a modem not supported by his ISP. It is his own fault and you should not have to refund him anything.

You sold him a properly working modem. It's his fault that it doesn't work with his ISP - not yours.
Provided that your auction was truthful, I wouldn't refund him back anything.

Screw him. You refunded his money for the modem, why should you have to deal with the shipping as well? As the saying goes, Caveat Emptor.

You will get a negative if you don't refund him the shipping. I don't pretend to know which one you should do. The question you should ask yourself is "Is the $X shipping fee worth not getting a negative". If it is, then refund. If it isn't then don't refund and hope not to get a negative.

Why is why I absolutely refuse to sell on E-scam anymore. Why should he have to pay for the buyer's stupidity??

you got modem back .. he at least gets his ebay price back. Not too sure about shipping. Negotiate and if he's still a hard head, go half.

I think he should be glad you returned him the price for the modem.
It's his mistake for not checking compatibility issue.

I wouldn't have taken it back.

Wow, why does everyone think one negative comment is the end of the world??? I thought that you had the opportunity to reply to a negative on ebay... I've seen several negative comments before that I completely ignored after hearing the sellers side of it. So, he puts in a negative: "seller wouldn't refund my shipping." You simply reply "Works like new, buyer made mistake, I was nice enough to accept a return." I wouldn't hesitate to buy from someone with a record like this.

As a card-carrying Goody Two-Shoes:

You are not ethically or morally obligated to refund the shipping. The buyer bought the wrong item. In fact, you'd be entitled to deduct listing and auction fees since it is their mistake not yours.

However, as Garet Jax said, an eBayiatch might well give you a negative even though it is his fault. You might be able to talk them out of it by explaining this is just like ordering a (working) part from an online store and returning it, but many eBayers have no concept of logic and will just be confused by the analogy.

This is exactly what I was thinking...

Is it a gray Fujitsu/Orckit modem? If so pretty much a limited number of other verizon customers is going to be your market. Its not your fault he didn't research what he was buying. You were a nice guy to accept it back, he can eat the shipping cost. You're not walmart.

When he threatened you in the beginning, you should have told him to suck it. At the very least he could have admitted his mistake and tried to work something out instead of pulling some crap stunt like "if you don't refund me everything I'm leaving you a negative and report you to paypal."

Now, since you are being extremely nice and said you would do a refund, you should still get back your ebay fees and shipping fees. You shouldn't have to pay for any of this (including the initial shipping).

After reading all the feedback, I am not going to issue him the refund on shipping.
The modem was Speed Touch Home, and on my auction, I told anyone who wants it, must check with their ISP before bidding on it.
I am already been extra nice to him by take back the modem without restocking fee, I am not going to pick up tab of his mistake. Since most of you agree that is the best way. I am going to risk of him put a negative feedback on me.
