When my system died i had to remove my stock heatsink for athlon 64 3400+ and put the CPU into my new mobo and reseat. But im noticing my temps are a bit higher. Usually 40-42 idle when i used to get 36-38 idle. I didnt reapply any thermal compound and used the same thermal pad thats been on there for awhile. Should i reseat with thermal paste?

Absolutly...never use the same thermal compound when you have to uninstall a HSF from a CPU...clean the HSF and CPU completly..and then use new paste.

I dont know..but my AMD64 3200+winchester runs no hotter than 28-29C at idle..so 40C looks pretty high for me.
As for the thermal paste..Artic silver 5 is pretty good...but in your case...anything would be better than "old paste from before".

Yup, always clean off all old stuff down to the metal and reapply new. If you have a pad on there now, use lighter fluid (naphtha) to remove all traces of it.
