Should I RAID or not? Please read!

I don't do any video editing, nor do I need massive amounts of space.

However, I do game frequently.

Should I spent extra money to do a RAID of 2 40gb hdds or just use 1 80gb hdd, and why?

i doubt a raid would help you at all

the performance increase would be very small while gaming (probably not even noticable)

Well not to dispute a diamond and elite member, but I think that it would be worth it just for the load times. For example I hate waiting on BF1942 to load maps on my old 7200rpm 20GB maxtor. Another route you might take though is getting one of those wd raptors and a serial ata card. That would give you some very nice performance.

My harddrives went from 26MB/sec (single 7200rpm 2mb cache ide) to 50MB/sec (dual 7200rpm 2mb cache raid 0). For me it was definately worth it.

If you want to make use of two drives, use one for for removeable backup.

The only thing it could help in games, given sufficient RAM and adequate CPU is load times and what and that is not money well spent compared to on actual game-play performance from a better viddy card and such. What difference can it make anway -that between 20s and 10s in the best case? A higher performance single HDD (higher densitiy, higher RPM, etc) could negate any difference compared to two lesser HDD's and without any of potential problems.
