Should I quit my job?

Just a little background info, I'm a freshman in college (by the end of this semester I'll be a sophomore hour wise). I'm taking 17 hours this semester, and currently have a credit card and cell phone bill. Neither are that bad, but they both require a job, along with paying for gas, car payment, and insurance.

Currently I work at the premiere sporting goods store in my town (Chattanooga natives should know Rock/Creek Outfitters). I work with the marketing director maintaining the website. It's an OK job, but really repetitive. I've been working with computers for 6+ years, so experience isn't a problem. I don't look forward to going to work like I used to, and the pay is so-so ($6.20/hour).

I've been thinking about quitting for a while. The only problem I have is that the people there are great and...it is a job that provides income. I was looking at the classifieds my school has and they have a job posting from the local Federal Parks (Chickamauga Battlefield and Point Park). It's the perfect job for me, really. I'm a history major and I'd be presenting history to people. I have good group-talking skills, so that's not a problem, and the pay is more than I'm making now, and I could get more hours in.

So should I quit my job?

CLIFFS (because someone will ask for them):
1. Freshman in college with bills and is taking 17 hours this semester
2. Works at premiere sporting goods store but makes so-so pay and doesn't enjoy work anymore
3. Found job posting that would fit me perfectly (history presentation at local state park)
4. Should I quit my job and move on?

My advice is find an internship for whatever kind of work you're looking to get into. I was making $10/h as an IT intern when I started college (last year) and after 7 months of that I was hired on full time into a job that would have required an A.S. and 3-4 year IT experience otherwise. So now my job is paying for me to go to school and for me to type this response. 🙂 (I'm also making almost twice as much as when I was an intern so the money isn't to bad.)

I do need to find something like that...dang...

If you hate your current job, you can definitely find another at 6.20 an hour.

If you're so sure you can get that other job, why don't you just apply for it and then quit after you get it?

An internship in your field is a really good idea like KuJoe said.

there are only 2 major reasons why people stay at a job, 1 is the pay, 2 is because they enjoy what they do, seems like your current job has neither, time to quit.

Most companies will be more inclined to hire you full time after they see your abilities and even if they don't, the experience on your resume is worth more than $6.20/h.

Even if you did like your job, $6.20 is highway robbery.
Here in Florida, theres no state income tax and minimul wage is $6.675.
Damm, I didn't think anyone in the US still making under $6.50/hr.

Holy cow, federal minimum wage is only $5.15.
And Tennesse has no minimum wage law.

Well, for one it's a federal job. I'm reading up online about federal job applications, and it seems like a lot of stuff, and one mess-up could get me rejected...

That's what I thought. During the summer I do IT work (I know the people and my boss and I are great friends), and I get $8/hour, and this summer that's going up to $9....

So what's the best way to quit? Just tell them that it's not working out and I have 2 weeks, email, letter?

Apply for the new job, see if you get an offer for the new job that's pay and hours are what you want, and if it looks good, then quit existing job.

If it were me I'd keep the job, but be looking and applying elsewhere.

Reasons I'd stay -
1) It doesn't sound like you hate the job or are having any problems there, you'd just rather be doing something else and making a little more money, but you don't have that lined up right now.
2) You said you like the people you work with, that makes up for a lot in a current job.
3) Those bills have to get paid somehow.
4) You can still look for something else and quit when you're ready to move onto something better.

If you are thinking of trying to get on with the Park Service full time after you graduate then check out the Student Career Experiences Program (SCEP). It is a very good way to get your foot in the door. With all the returning vets from the Iraq war, it may be the only way for a non-vet to get in the door. Of course, if you're a vet it would be double good.

Basically what yowolabi said. You're not guaranteed to get a new job, so apply for a new job, if you get it, great, quit your old job and enjoy it with better pay and field that is closer to your major. If you quit your job now and don't get new job you are SOL with no income and bills to pay.

BTW 6.20 is a horrible wage for IT work, even in Tennessee.
