Should I play Fallout 1 and Fallout 2?

It seems that these two games are always on people's "favorite games" list and I've heard lots of appraisal for it's storyline, atmosphere, and dark humor. With Fallout 3 coming out later this year, would you guys recommend playing this, rather dated, game to experience the games themselves and to get acquainted with the Fallout background/history in anticipation for Fallout 3?

Or is this game too old and dated to get into? I remember hearing that there are some recent mods/patches out for the game, would anyone know of a resolution mod, much like the one for the BGs and Planescape? Getting a copy wouldn't be that difficult, the Fallout collection is at Gogamer for 20 bucks.

Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: I played Fallout 2 for the first time in Nov'ish 2007 on an AMD X2 6000+, 4 Gb RAM, 8800GT on a 42" HDTV. I loved every minute of it once I picked it up (small learning curve).

ie. see past the graphics, it shows you more than enough graphically. Immerse yourself in the universe.

Hell yes. Two of the best games ever from the days when games succeeded on quality of the game itself rather than the quality of the graphics.

Look, you can shoot people in the groin. How can I not get this across to you people?

Absolutely. Like Elcs I didn't even play them until just recently, but I loved them despite that.

not a bad idea. I tried playing on a similar system and the graphics were so bad.. but maybe if I play it on my TV it'll help to be a bit more immersing. Hmm.

Of course. Why wouldn't you play a couple of the best games ever conceived by man?

You might also be interested in the newer Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura , it is made by the ex Fallout team (formed Troika after Interplay / Black Isle Studios fell apart) and people tell me that it has near identical gameplay to the fallout series, with a different setting. (I have never played Fallout (therefore unable to verify), but I have recently acquired a copy of the three games (fallout 1, 2 and tactics)).

Fallout 1 and 2 are must plays, and if you like them try checking out Arcanum like the above poster recommened, all three are REALLY REALLY good games that should never be passed up by an RPG player.

Definitely play them. IMO a couple of the two best RPGs ever made. The first has an excellent story and IMO a better atmosphere, but the second has a larger world with more to do, more weapons, more companions, etc.

DO NOT PLAY THEM. They might have been something 15 years ago but it's low rez crap now. Sure I have memorys of games back then that I miss but have you ever tried going back and playing them? It's much worse if it's a game that you haven't played. These fallout games are primitive as pong (not exaggerating much).

I frequently install/reinstall old games, and very often enjoy them. It would help to know what other games and types of games you enjoy to begin with, but I vote yes for Fallout.

If you want Fallout 3 to disappoint you, then play Fallout 1 or 2. If you do not want Fallout 3 to disappoint you, then don't play Fallout 1 or 2.

Long story short I think Bethesda's version will be a shallow far cry of what Fallout 1 and 2 brought to the table.

I'm afraid that this might be true, but I hope not, the Fallout's were some of the best games I've played.

To the OP, I also recommend playing these titles if your a RPG fan.

1 & 2 for sure. I just finished Fallout Tactics a little while ago. I was not a fan of it in the beginning but by the 3rd mission or so it started to grow on me.

Yes, but the graphics will obviously be an issue (for me at least). They are amazing games still. The attention to detail, RPG elements and story more than make up for it.

Primitive as pong? If you can get past some low-resolution graphics (and the gore is actually pretty impressive and gruesome), then FO 1/2 have more depth than most games out today. There are so many quests, so many ways to go through the game (be a genocidal child killer, a diplomat who never touches anyone, a stealthy thief/backstabber), and so much open-endedness without leaving one lost, that it doesn't matter when you play them. I seriously played them only a couple years ago - the graphics were just as bad back then.

I've tried Wasteland and Fallout. I couldn't get into them. There was no direction. I wasted half an hour trying to figure out what was going on, got killed a lot, and uninstalled.

I agree with that. From what I've seen of Fallout 3 it's a Fallout in name only. It doesn't look like it's going to capture any spirit of the first two.

You know what, I'm going to reinstall the first one and play it again. It's been long enough that I'm sure I've forgotten most of the humor and whimsy that made it so unique. It should be a welcome change from the clickfests that have the nerve to call themselves modern RPGs.

Okay, I just got done reinstalling Fallout #1. I played through a couple of minutes and then added the resolution patch to check out the difference. It's like night and day. It looks great in 1600x1050, you can see so much more of the area you're exploring and there's no pixelation.

yes play them but don't get psyched for Falout 3 as it will suck, especially since bethesda is making it.
