Ok guys i need some help deciding if i should upgrade from Windows Server 2003 R2 to Windows Server 2008. Price is not an issue here really because i'm a MSDN subscriber, and as such, get a copy for free. If i upgrade i will definitly want the x64 version. A lot of microsoft's server software going forward will only work with x64 like exchange and Hyper-v. Take for granted i am a microsoft developer. So thats on of the main things i use this machine for. I've made a short list of the pros and cons i can think of so far:
Pros: IIS7
Hyper-V RC
Cons: Maybe slower video encoding performance? (DVD Rebuilder + CCE SP)
Windows Home Server will no longer work (Biggest con i can come up with. Even with
the data corruption bug windows home servers ability to back up everything is just
steller. Its just a set it and forget it solution that you really don't have to worry about
anymore. That being said WHS that i have is a trial edition and will eventually have to
buy if i want it because its not available on MSDN> but to be able to back up every
computer in my network (Workstation/Server/Notebook) without intervention is
awesome.
I know Windows Server 2008 has a bunch of fancy new functionality for Active Directory but i'm not so much worried about that. I only have a workgroup. Anyone run windows server to see how resource use compares to Server 2003?
