Question for the Aussies: I see no one has mentioned Darwin when discussing cities. Is that simply because of the size and its (presumably) out the way location?

Just curious, thanks.

Do you like small cities with extreme heat and humidity?
Brisbane gets hot during the day in summer, but cools in the evening and night, but once you get up near Cairns and Darwin, you can enjoy 25-27c over nite temps, thanks but no thanks, lol.

I think Sydney has the best compromise of year round weather, not as hot as Brisbane/QLD, and not as cold as Melbourne/VIC.

Different ballpark mate. Darwin only has 200k people. Barely a city.

Hot as hell. Relative humidity is about 9000%.

In the middle of nowhere.

@Cerpin_Taxt: I say go for it, and I also suspect it is what you want to do deep down and are maybe just looking for a little help to nudge you over. Nothing wrong with that.

If you do move to Oz and can't find something to do, I strongly suggest buying a didgeridoo and learning how to play it. Apparently, it cures sleep apnea and snoring too besides just sounding cool.

"Why yes... yes I am an expert didgeridoo player you babe..." Chix can't resist the vibrating nature of it. 😎

In the middle of nowhere? Your COUNTRY is in the middle of nowhere! 😛

Seriously though, 200K would be just fine for me, I don't like huge cities, too crowded. Just seems like Darwin would be good if you really wanted to explore the northern latitudes of Oz. But I guess that would be like saying Chicago would be good for exploring the northern latitudes of the US, the sheer size of Oz probably doesn't make it that realistic.

Just curious, tis all. Thanks.

Meh, get a good fourbe (4WD) an you can go where you want. In winter anyway.

In the wet season its like that line from Forrest Gump.

"One day it started raining, and it didn't quit for four months"

The crime thing is lol worthy. Those statistics arnt counting crime the same in each country. Our 30% is counting speeding as a crime. It's stupid.

Australia has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, not the highest.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_pri_per_cap-crime-prisoners-per-capita

Prisoners per capita we're at #73. So when it comes to crimes that are jail worthy we're doing well.

yeah, but the whole island is a prison and all of the citizens are prisoners. so those that you actually consider prisoners on this island, must be some crazy insane dangerous people.

One big prison with its own, separate, prison population? how can that be compared to any other country?

The prison population are the ones that pay extra to stay safe from the poisonous animals they have there and the drop bears. 😛

I hope that internet censorship line was a joke. Otherwise you're a fuckin retard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_Australia

Censorship of video games and Internet sites hosted in Australia are considered to be the strictest in the western world.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_Australia#cite_note-0

Nope... just proving a point.

I am sure you will come back with some insult but knowing where you live it will be censored so we can't read it. 😛

That just means its illegal to host X rated shit here. Saying that our internet is censored is disingenuous.

Our internet isn't censored at all, in any form.

EDIT: Wow this wiki article sucks. The writer assumes that proposed censorship laws were passes, when in fact they were abandoned. But the guy that wrote the article doesnt realise this.

The entire bit on the internet is totally bogus. LOL.

The old muscle cars are expensive and as rare as hens teeth, but you do see a number of modern muscle cars, but at $1.50 a litre for petrol/gas, not that many.

Some of the talk in this thread portrays Australia as a sheep farm stuck in the 70's, but there's 3 megacities here+Adelaide and Perth which have about a 1million people living in each.

I rented one of these to drive from Cairns to Brisbane in...very nice car

I felt very safe while i was there for 3 months, although Alice Springs was a bit sketchy, found it to be expensive compared to Canada though, Perth and Sydney where especially expensive cities.

Had one of these show up in my room

also came across one of these

i see the video game ban issue is finally fixed, but it shows the rednecks are pretty hardcore in australia....i mean seriously, its not good if the us is more free than you on such issues. even left 4 dead 2 was censored there😛

I'd say go for it. 6 years ago, I had an opportunity to take a job in Anchorage, AK. and took it. No regrets, and I think it's been the one of the best decisions I've made. Loving it up here. Back then when I made the decision, I was working in a crappy job and hated the area I was living in, so I had some incentive to leave. Plus of all the places, Alaska seemed the most interesting.

I'd say Australia qualifies as another on my most interesting places to live, so I'd take it if an opportunity came up that allowed me to move as well. Hopefully, your company will offer you some kind of moving allowance, bonus, or some kind of assistance in getting you down there and situated.

No doubt, I remember being impressed by the 6cylinder Ford from 2002, let alone a tank like that.....but were you on a first name basis with the gas station attendant?

The trucks and semi's usually clean up the kanga, most passenger cars just waltz by.
I drove up and down from Brisbane to Rocky/Cairns etc many times and never hit any animal, same with going south to Sydney/Melbourne.

Australia has NO Internet cencorship.
Australia has NO tornadoes.
NO cyclones
NO earthquakes
Spiders only attack when threatened.
Snakes only attack when threatened.
Hardly ever see them.
Australias crime rate is absolutely nothing compared to the rest of the world.
Attitude and personality in general is distinct.
Lowest mental cases in the world.
Beaches EVERYWHERE.
Great ecconomy and down to earth politicians.
Sport institutions and clubs around the whole country.
Gyms everywhere.
Blondies everywhere.
Police are top blokes.
Police women will hit on you (its happened to me )
Cities are lively.
Recreation is very high.

Mate if your thinking bout moving to Australia, you can think no more.
Australia is a wonderful place to call home 🙂

It was actually quite good on gas compared to the Toyota HiAce we had...40 liters would get us 450km's fill up was between $75-95 , i don't think it ever went over $100 , coffee was very expensive as well

Gf has lifelong friend that lives there and a family friend just moved there on a whim. Seems to be a nice place to live.

I liked Darwin, although i would have hated it without air conditioning

As for the beaches what's the point when you can't use the water because of all the dangerous crap you guys have over there?

I can see why the prisoners were unable to escape.

Also you forgot about the free vehicles everyone gets:

riding-kangaroos.jpg

Are you sure you even live there as half the stuff you listed are false.

You do get tornadoes, earthquakes, snakes and spiders do attack at other times or if they think they can eat you. 😛

The crime rate is still high in many areas and your mental health thing is not true either:

So maybe you need to look up some facts before tossing out random stuff.
