Ok, Here is the story, My wife and I are so sick of the weather here in Minnesota. It's cold and crappy at least 6 months out of the year. I don't mind the summers but they are to short and the winters are tooo long!! I have a good job and may be able stay with the same company in Arizona. I also have two aunts and four cousins in the Phoenix area, but my Mom and Dad and most of my other relatives live within two hours right now. I guess I'm trying to get some feedback from anyone who moved from the Midwest to the Southwest. I've been to Arizona three times and from what I can remember it seemed like a nice place. (It was back in the eighties) I've checked some websites on the cost of living and stuff and it looks like it would be very comparable to what we pay now.(except for our heating bill of course) So any thoughts??? What should we do??

Two years ago i moved from Minnesota to Arizona.

I love it. I call home and tease my dad because it has been in the 80s here recently, and they are getting 8-10 inches of snow.

The summers are hot, but it isn't as bad as the humidity of MN. Besides, i'll take 4 months of blazing heat, rather than 8 months of freezing temps.

The cost of living is actually much lower than MN (depending on where in MN you are and where in Phx you are).

If you have any more questions let me know. I'll probably never live in MN again...i love it here.

Hee hee - I made the opposite move as a kid. Personally I really get along best in the midwest, and like the people there, so for me it would not have been a desirable move to go back to Arizona.

I relocated from North Dakota to Texas, the AC bills in AZ will match your heating bills easily, and it's hot as hell in the summer.

Remember the hottest day in MN last year? Add 20 degrees & skin cancer to that day X 5 months...

I lived in Phoenix for a few years and loved it..You will have to get used to a horrible commute and brown air though..

10 and 60 are gridlocked pretty much during the entire rush hour
so much pollution you can see it in the air, makes LA look like xanadu.

with no humidity. It is a huge difference between tx and az heat. The heat index here is the same as the temperature for the most part, which is very comparable to the heat index of Minnesota when it is hot and humid.

Oh and those summer AC bills are high, but look at this way, you don't use heat OR AC for most of the winter.

They widened the 60 now. Five lanes from mesa to the I-10. It isn't really as bad anymore.

would probably be more than 20..I remember days where it would reach close to 120...oddly enough the summer's in NC are 10x worse since there is virtually 0 humidity in AZ.

Finally...took them forever to do it..

The running joke while I was there was there were two seasons in Arizonia, Summertime and Constructiontime

Sorry, it's not the heat, but the humidity...

Ever grab a black steering wheel on a car baking in the sun in July/August? It's the heat...

I kinda did the same thing 2 years ago moving from Upstate NY to GA. Cold to HOT, sucks. I can't stand the summers here. All of my family is up in NY, its just my wife and I down here. Her family is in NY also. Our lease is up in August and we are moving back north most likely. Probably not so far as Upstate NY because there is a whole lot of employment opportunities. If you are close to your families it will probably be the hardest part. I couldn't care either way, but my wife wants to be closer to family.

Move down to the bayou and then see how it is. We get all of the sun of Arizona, plus 100% humidity all summer long.

What will you do with out the Mall of America?!?! :p You not diggin the 5 inches of snow we just got?
Keep in mind you will be moving from a lush green environment to a dry, red one. What city in AZ? Some cities out there are way expensive, even more so than Minneapolis area (which I know is rediculious). But then again, some are not too bad. As for me, I like the cold way more than the insane heat. I like green grass and trees too. My favorite thing about the midwest has to be the chance to experience all of the seasons. In AZ you will have one. Minnesota is my pick of the two.

I live in Flagstaff, AZ and i love it here!!! :D
I've had roomates from wisconsin that said they would never go back. Instead of the 4 or so months of decent weather you get there we get like 10 :p
The cost of living isnt that bad...not as bad as soemwhere like cali at least :p The biggest problem as I see out here is the water. Its almost like depending on the city/area you get different kinda of water...some thats drinkable and other thats just...not as drinkable but tolerable...
If you got kids the education system in az is sub-par right now. Our economy is crap due to a previous govn who really messed things up with letting people buy SUV...mod them to be less polluting...and the state pays for like a 1/4 of the sticker price or something liek that...needeless to say lots was lost and schools and universities here have had to suffer....
If u can stand those two things though I'd say AZ is the palce to be :) In the next few years we can hope for the big quake that send cali into the sea and then it will be ocean front property :D

You've obviously never been anywhere except phoenix...flagstaff, prescott, tucson, every other city in the state prettymuch ahs all 4 seasons. We also have lake havasu in spring....one that DOESN't cause lake effect snow and girls take their tops off at ALL year long :p

Arizona is great in the winter time. 99% of the time, during the winter, you'll use neither the AC or the heat as someone else said. The commute sucks on the freeways, but if you learn the surface streets (Which is easy since everything is gridded in the Phoenix Metro area), it's easy to get around it. I personally love it here, some of the most beautiful weather you'll ever get the chance to experience.

Well if you are dumb enough not to have a 'sun shade' then you probably shouldn't be in AZ. You're right.

There is virtually 0 high paying jobs and no employers in Flaggstaff and the cost of living is outrageous. The wife and I were looking at relocating back there but changed our minds after visiting.

Sometimes, during the heat of summer, I had to take a rest stop from the heat when walking 1 mile to campus. It's so hot, even the breeze was HOT. But Spring and Fall were nice.

Northern Arizona, Flagstaff or Sedona, has cooler climate than that in Phoenix and Tucson. But I think most big high tech companies are located near Phoenix.

I've spent quite a bit of time in MN & AZ (grew up in North & South Dakota have lived in Colorado 6 years, Texas 11 years), both have thier merits, if you're trying to get away from the snow, it's the right move.

It's just that since I've moved South a saying my dad had has made a lot more sense;

"40 below keep out the riff raff."
