Should I make a big deal out of this - experience at Lowes.

Yesterday I needed to run by Lowes to pick up a saw. When I parked, this gruffy looking old guy also parked next to me. We walked into the garden section at the same time, and I couldn't help but think something was up with this dude.

I went and found my saw, then went to checkout. I was paying by credit card, and on the back AND front of this card in nice, big, bold, blue letters that read "SEE ID". My cashier, the only one in the garden section, looked directly at the card and I could see her thinking about asking me for my ID (yes, her mental process was that slow and obvious).

She decided not to, and swiped my card. At that point, I told her I would appreciate it if she asked me for my ID, as she just used an unauthorized credit card and defeated the purpose me writing "SEE ID" on my card. The bitch rolled her eyes, then checked my ID. At that point, I was a little heated.

Now, all this time while she was deciding to check my ID, out walks the gruffy dude with no merchandise, and pockets looking mighty full. He set off the anti-theft alarms, but didn't stop walking. The whole time, my cashier acted like nothing had happened. She just walked over, entered her security code and that was it.

I walked out, just thinking that there had to be more to what I just happened. This woman just really couldn't give a sh!t. :|

I was tempted to go back in, but I was in somewhat of a hurry. Should I do anything about it?

As a Lowe's shareholder, this pisses me off. But at the same time I can't say that I'm surprised. When you pay a cashier minimum wage (or whatever she was being paid), you can't expect much dedication or company loyalty in return.

If you're serious about having your ID checked, you should have walked over to the CS desk, asked to speak to the manager or Cashier Supervisor and replayed the scenario for them.
Most of the time though, it's like trying to teach a pig to sing..... It onlt frustrates you and annoys the pig.

What is it you want to do something about?

The fact that she didn't ask for ID? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know of anything that requires her to do that just because you write it on your card. Was it signed? If so it wouldn't be unauthorized. If not, the "bitch" should have just rolled her eyes and refused to accept it at all.

Her slow mental processes? Maybe she was just thinking about people who write "SEE ID" in big, blue letters on the front and back of their cards and what she thinks of that. ;)

The fact that the other guy might have walked out with something he didn't pay for? Good luck with that when you don't know who he was or if indeed he actually took anything and it was on some other day.

The card is not signed for that very purpose. As a child, my mother was robbed when I lived in Panama, and I've seen firsthand the effects of stolen credit cards, and ruined credit lines. I guess that's why I'm such a freak out making sure people check ID.

And I could also care less that the guy stole something, it's just the total disreguard of the employee that is most aggravating. Being a manager in my own job position makes me care how a customer is treated - I deal with it everyday. Her lack of concern for whether something had been stolen, or whether people are commiting fraud that she can prevent is what bothers me.

Yeah, but if Lowes keeps up their "laid-back" attitude when it comes to cashiers and theft prevention - as consumers, we're all going to face higher costs for stuff we buy down the road.

I'm all for contacting Lowes and reporting these issues. I'm sure the managers name and number is right on the receipt.

Make a copy of your receipt. The cashier's ID is on there somewhere. If not, the register and time will be and that will identify her. Write or call the main office.

Chances are you will get no where with the store manager. He is there a lot of hours and has a pretty good idea what is going on already. Head office will be very interested in what you have to say. If not for the "ask for ID' thing, then definately for the bottom line loss in theft.
