Should I leave my monitor on all the time?

I usually leave my computer on from whenever I first use it till I go to bed that night. But the monitor I shut off when I'm not at the computer. Should I just let it go to standby or suspend instead? Is that better for it?

And what about shutting it off at night? When I shut the computer off, would it be better to leave the monitor and let it go to it's power-saving mode?

I'm just wondering which way will cause the least amount of wear.

I leave mine on. It goes to suspend mode after 15 minutes of inactivity. It doesn't hurt it.

When the monitors goes into its lowest power save mode, typically 4-5 watts, The only component being powered is the sensor that detects the H/V-signal used to wake the monitor up out of power save mode. Same deal with all television sets that use remote controls, they draw 4-5 watts of power to keep the remote sensor alive.

So technically power save is the same as turning the power switch off. Some people will argue it is better to turn off electronic equipment when not in use, others will claim it causes more stress on the monitor.

I turn my system and monitor off when I leave the office every night. If you are worried, buy a monitor from a company with good return / warranty policies.

Always - Use a screen saver and a surge protector, especially if you live in areas prone to lightning.

Good Luck

I thought monitor technology has gone far enough wherein it rendered screen savers as a mere novelty?

Most monitors still use p22 phosphor, to my knowledge this has not changed in the 15 years I've been working in the monitor industry.

If you are not going to be using your monitor over the night or something, you can turn it off. But if you are going to be leaving it alone for a few hours and returning to it, keep it on, in most cases if is a recent monitor it has power-saving features as one of the other posts mentioned and that will suffice.

Monitors today are definetly better from the earlier ones in the ways of power consumption, and screen burn-in rate..so that isn't a big concern, but the monitor even in power-save mode will draw SOME electricity..and if you are gonna be sleeping..might as well turn the monitor off and on in the morning when you need to use it..Regards

Gosharkss,

Do you know where a person could get a schematic diagram for a Mag dx700t?

I leave my monitor and PC on 24X7. I set power management to go into standby after 15 minutes. I am not the least bit worried. I also have an HP Vectra NT box at work and I think I have had it turned on for 3 years straight. I don't even have it going into standby, just a Windows screen saver. I just get up and leave each night in the middle of a spreadsheet or document.

Set your monitor to go into sleep mode after 15 minutes and the system to go into standby in 30 minutes.

I turn my monitor off, because we have a power crisis right now in CA.

It's better to switch your monitor to standy mode rather than constantly turning it on/off. The same goes for most electrical equipment. And yes, monitors can have phosphor burning and etched images if they're left on for extreme periods of time with still images. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

But if it's in low power standy or is off then I don't need a screensaver right?

For me, at night I just turn it off because it won't be in use for around 12 hours at the least. I might leave it on and go on standby if I forget. No big deal. Sometimes I turn off my computer at night too so obviously I shut off monitor also.

But for the day when my computer is always on I let it go on standby after 15 minutes.

My Iiyama goes into suspend five seconds after I turn the machine off.

Turning the monitor on has the greatest chance of damaging it so unless the idea of wasting 4w is unacceptable then leave it on. The only time mine goes off is when being moved or when I will be away from my machine for more than a couple of days.

When your monitor is on standby it's still turned on but the electron gun is not firing anything at the tube. Therefore you don't need a screensaver because the tube is inactive. In fact you can't even see the screensaver (or anything else) if it is running.

Proview has purchased Mag and CTX, so you can try contacting proview and ask them. Most manufacturers only give schematics to authorized repair centers. Schematics are considered confidential information by every manufacturer I know of.

Good Luck

Gosharkss,

Thanks for the info, I guess I don't have a hope in hell of getting one then.
