i went to a restaurant with some ppl on monday and basically, i was very disappointed with the service. this has happened before, but i just figured that the waitress was having a bad (and busy) day. however, this past monday, the restaurant was pretty slow when my friends and i came in. i ordered and then took our seats. the waitress comes out and was throwing our napkins like a frisbee onto the table. it would be cool if she was accurate, but she was not.

then i asked her if i could have a pot of tea. though she didn't blatantly blurt out "what the fcuk do you want?!", judging by her facial expression, she seemed quite annoyed by the request.

when the food was brought out, she puts down the wrong dish in front of me. the guy diagonally across from me says "oh that's me", claiming the dish. so i just waited for a second of two for the waitress to move the dish, but she doesn't. while i was waiting for her to make her move, she brings the next dish from her tray, and it was mine. i indicated to her that was my dish, but obviously, the place in front of me is occupied by the previous dish. i thought maybe she would make an attempt to give the dish in front of me to the right guy, but she just stood there. so fine, i handed the dish to the guy, and she puts my dish in front of me.

after we're done eating... just before we leave, it dawned on me that the service was completely garbage. i decided i wasn't going to tip. then i decided to leave the change in my pocket... which was like... $0.17. then the person next to me persuaded me not to do that, so i just picked up my change and left. as i was leaving tho, i saw that no one else left a tip either. so either the whole table was full of cheap asses, or everyone felt the same way as i did.

now back to the original question... if the service was crap, do i leave a tip?

If the service is crap, why should you tip them? It's like a bonus for a job well done. If the job isn't well done, no bonus.

we've been there before with a thread like this, but... a tip is a privilege, not a right.

I never leave a tip if the service was crap. If I want to give away money for no service and to feel warm inside I donate to a charity.

I wouldn't tip more than 10% in this case. Unfortunately in most places in the US, servers earn the majority (if not all) of their money off of tips. You can debate the system, but that's how it works now. I feel like a scumbag if I don't tip something, despite how crappy (justified or not) the service might have been.

Sure, leave a tip. Suggest to the waitress she better shape up if she wants to make some bread.

No. Crappy service = no tip.

Also, I think leaving a small amount of change might be better at getting the point across than not leaving a tip at all. It makes a point that you would have tipped, but you obviously didn't think the service you recieved warranted much of one at all.

Tips are for GOOD service. If they get them when they know they are crap, what is the incentive to be good?

Too bad tipping in america changed to Food Service Charge and you have to pay whether the service was good or not.

Tipping is to reward them for doing a good job, being friendly, being attentive, etc. If you get bad service, you don't need to tip. I wouldn't. But it'd have to be pretty dman bad for me to leave no tip at all.

well i'm just wondering if what i did was generally unacceptable.
normally, i try to tip well though. i went to dinner with a chick one time (her treat), and when she left the tip, i said "that's it? you're cheap."

i think she was pissed. hahahaha :p

Better than not leaving a tip, is leaving a single penny (or the smallest coin you have). If you leave no tip, then she may think you just forgot. If you leave a penny, then they know you were pissed.

I never leave no tip. I gotta have a couple coins somewhere, just to show that they did a crappy service and I wasn't being a cheap ass.

Dude, type "tip" in search and see how many other threads are out there on the same topic.
