Should I keep my Xbox 360?

Should I keep the Xbox 360?

  • Yes, there are too many good games for the 360 to sell.

  • Yes, there will be a must-have game coming out soon.

  • No, most - if not all - the good games are multi-platform anyways.

  • No, there are NO good games for the 360.

Well, after mulling over [thread=2053901] what game I should get for the Xbox [/thread], I figured out - well, there's really nothing that I'm dying to get for the system.

Hell, I went to Gamestop last week to see if anything would whet my gaming appetite, and I ended up getting 2 games for a system that [thread=2051914]doesn't work anymore[/thread] instead!

As a quick background - I had a PS2 with a wide range of games, and bought a Wii; oddly enough there were some must-have games for that system (Muramasa, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, No More Heroes, etc.). . . and a buddy of mine has an out-of-warranty RRoD 360 that he gave me and I managed to get fixed:

But there's no must-have game for the Xbox360 (as I have a gaming PC) so far!

So at this point, I'm at a crossroads:
- I have a Wii/PS2 already
- I play both PC and console games somewhat regularly - although, not as much anymore

So the question is; is there a place, or at least a reason (killer app) for a place, for the Xbox 360 at my home? In another words, are there any exclusives in the near future or already out for the 360 that makes it worth holding onto the 360?

Do you have any sort of Media Center PC? If so, the 360 makes a great Media Extender. Otherwise, unless you need the money, you might just hang on to it.

Indeed. Windows integration is nice for media. Plus Netflix Watch Instantly is great. I wish they would have better Zune integration though (i.e. play the fucking songs, not the stupid music videos I have to pay for).

But in this case, he got the Xbox for free and has no PS3. So at least he now has a means to play current console games.

This. He only has a PC and PS2.

360 has a decent amount of non-PC games to play. I'd keep it.

Actually, I'm planning on setting up a halfway decent (as in w/ a lower-end discreet GPU and i3 CPU) HTPC as my next purchase - which means w/ a 360 controller for PC I can just as well play a lot of the games on it instead of the 360 itself - so I'm mulling over whether I should just sell the 360 and use the $$$ towards that.

Oh Wow this thread again

And yet, your contributions continue to be unique an constructive. I really, truly appreciate the valuable input, ass-erm I mean, friend.

Which would you recommend? A lot of the games I can think of are PC ports or vice-versa, and I can't fathom playing FPS' using a gamepad!

If you plan on getting PS3 instead you can sell it. There are plenty of Multiplatform games to get it

I feel the 360 exclusives (ones you can't get on PC or PS3) are weaker than the PS3's but since you don't have a PS3 you might as well keep it for the multiplatform games that you can't get on PC

It depends on the games you play. There are a lot of additional considerations with an HTPC:

1. Will that "lower end" discreet GPU be adequate to play the games you want?
2. If the answer to the first question is no, you'll have to get a bigger and better graphic card, which could present cooling issues.
3. To follow #2, cooling issues may not seem like a big deal for most PCs, but typically, you want HTPCs to be as quiet as possible and if you start throwing higher end components into it, that will mean more fans and probably more noise.
4. Do you like sports games? If so, I'd recommend keeping the Xbox.

The big category is sports games. The PC is increasingly a wasteland in terms of sports games while the consoles do have a decent selection. Sports games were why I bought the Xbox in the first place.

1~3. I'm currently looking to get this desktop here and then throwing this in there. As far as games go, the most GPU-intensive game I have I can think of would be . . . UT3 or possibly Red Faction: Guerilla, so I'm not terribly worried about the performance aspect. As much as I'd like to deny it, I'm more in line w/ being a casual-PC user with the occasional hobby/dabbling in graphics/3D design (I'm using a desktop-replacement laptop [i7 CPU, 17.3" screen, Nvidia GT 230, etc.] as my main PC right now), so I'm contemplating selling the laptop as well and using the desktop as my main computer (and maybe get a smaller laptop later on), if I were to get it.

4. Nope, the closest thing I like to sports - watching or otherwise - would be MMA.

How can one even consider an Xbox for a media extender... sure, it has the features and support, but this shit is so loud and whiny that on worse days I don't even want to turn it on because just the thought of fan noise gives me a headache! Seriously, I hate it. Really enjoy the games but I have to wear foking headphones to almost not hear the whining - and even then I can! A friend has a a PS3 Slim and that thing is soooo silent when running. It's like night and day.

If you can keep it in another room and still hook up to your TV, then you're good. Two rooms away? Even better. Same room as your TV? I'm going crazy with the whine on mine.

As a side note, my neighbor can hear the whining through the wall. Yes, this shit is that loud. I think I'll just ignore my RRoD warranty and get me an XB-01 case or something... I can't stand the whine...

So, to sum up: if you will only game on it - keep it. But for the love of god, do not expect to enjoy watching a movie or series or anything when this thing is on and nearby.

I have no problems with noise with my Xbox media extenders. The one in our main entertainment center is also in an enclosed cabinet for added noise shielding, so we could even play DVDs in it.

I have a PS3 as well and have PS3 Media Server serving content to it, but to be honest, I don't use it often for streaming.

If you can keep it in another room and still hook up to your TV, then you're good. Two rooms away? Even better. Same room as your TV? I'm going crazy with the whine on mine.

Neither of my Xboxes make the noise you're describing. Are you playing DVDs in them or something?

So, to sum up: if you will only game on it - keep it. But for the love of god, do not expect to enjoy watching a movie or series or anything when this thing is on and nearby.

Nonsense. We use our Xbox for streaming Netflix and I have also used them to stream content via my new HTPC/media server (both movies and recorded shows). I never have noise issues.

Actually, now that I look, there really aren't many good 360 games that aren't available on the PC. A few are..

Bayonetta
FFXIII
Darksiders

As well as XBL titles such as

Shadow Complex
Castle Crashers

So...
Maybe keeping it isn't necessary after all? Who knows D:

The only play my 360 has gotten in the pass 2-3 years has been some arcade titles. I haven't turned it on in like a year though, my PC and PS3 cover pretty much everything I need.

Keep it. Flame on! Pc is becoming a terrible pain in the ass of a gaming platform again. Read the ubisoft drm thread on that board to see why. Flame off.

Q1 is a slow time for gaming. It will pick up in the next couple of months when the blockbuster summer titles come out. Just hang tight.

Huh? Q1 is usually a pretty decent time for games to come out still. It is the dreaded Q2 aka summer drought that sucks balls for game releases.

As for PC gaming being a pain, for the overwhelming majority of it no, Ubisoft is being a pain atm, but they have like 5-6 titles coming out for the PC.
