here's my story, my brother give me the A64 3000+ s754 newcastle chip. My current system have P4 3.0 prescott with asus p4c800 mobo, but that P4 chip was dead. so I need to find another CPU..

If I use the A64 3000+, i need to buy a new mobo s754 for it(thinking to get DFI board), is it faster than my P4 3.0 with current asus mobo? noticible performance gain before and after OC?

If not, am I suppose to get new s939 cpu and board? (costly), any of them support AGP? I still have the X850XT AGP card that works great.

any suggest is welcome. thanks in advance

You could do what I did, and buy the ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 mobo, which supports both AGP and PCI-E. It's only ~70 bucks. Then buy the 939 A64 chip of your choice for under $200 and you're good to go. You can use your current vid card and RAM, and you have a great upgrade path for PCI-E, dual-core, and SATA(I or II) + RAID down the road.

Performance-wise, you won't notice much difference among any of those chips though. I previously had a P4 3.06 running at 3.2GHz, and while the A64 is certainly "zippier" with its on-die memory controller, in games and such I can't tell much of a difference.

Since you have to buy a new mobo anyway though, I'd go with the 939 ASRock for more upgradeability. Sell the s754 chip.
