Well guys, currently i am paying $40 a month for cable which includes 60 channels, most of them crap. I hear DirecTV is cheaper and gets more channels. My quesiton is, does it get local channels?

I looked into getting DirecTV ... Biggest thing is that you must have a clear shot of the Southern sky.

$31.99/month buys you 110 channels, but none of them a local channels, an additional $11.99 is the cost for the local stations, but depending on your area you might not get all the local stations. Here in the Washington DC area we get ABC, FOX, NBC, CBS but not the WB or the UPN.

You can check by entering your zip code here:
Link

In the NYC area they get everything with the local stations package.

If you dont get all your local stations you can consider keeping cable and going down to their cheapest package, the basic cable package, which is just local stations for around $10-15 a month and then getting satellite ... Roughly the same $40/month but now you're getting 110 stations plus the local stations and if you so desire you can get other stuff like all the sports games (I think those are like $4.95 per game unless you go with the packages).

...no, but you could get one of those clip-on antennas that allow you to get them...I bought one and it rocks...I'll look up the name of it in a bit (box in the attic) :)

I would look into Dish Network.... the have a promotion for $9 dollars per month (for the first yr) ... and they include comedy central.

http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/promotions/index.shtml

Heres some info..... I have it and its great. Also depending on where you live you can get some local channels. Depends on how many local stations you have braodcasting in your area.

The new DIRECTV SAT was turn on thursday 3 am EST. It added local programing to 41 markets across the continetal US. Check the website to see if they are available in your area. The price for local programming is $5.99 a month. DIRECTV package for $31.99 give you over 110 channels of your favorite stations including comedy central as well. The DISH deal for $9 a month requires that you purchase their equipment for $199. DIRECTV equipment is free. You can certainly find a deal on the internet. If you can't, just post here, and I can help you. :)

Feel the Joy!

Dish Network Equipment is free too if you know where to look.... there has been much discussion on the free equipment and Dish does'nt require you to have it installed by their guy....

If you're in Canada, it's a no-brainer - DirecTV. Mainly because a judge here declared DirecTV to be broadcasting into Canada without authorization and declared their signal PUBLIC DOMAIN (because the Canadian government can't collect taxes on it, apparently). :D So you can decode DirecTV to your hearts content up in Canada and you can't get busted for it.

DirecTV is great. When you watch PPV, or HBO/etc, you see the true satellite picture quality. I pay about $38/month for my locals and their standard package and its 10x better than cable. I'm a happy customer and will continue to be one for a long time.

Dishnetwork is the best.... and you get local channels (hundreds of them...) too...

they were forced to carry all local channels in all markets by Jan 1st...2002 which is... yesterday!

dtv would be second choice ( i didn't like their basic package )...

i paid $19.99 for the dishnetwork's america's top 150 channels... ( i think they raised the price... but i paid by the year which gives me one month free and locked me into that price) also got all the equipments for $49... i installed it myself..... pointing to northwest

and from what i heard, dishnetwork is easier to hack...but both were hit by ecm recently....

I wonder how I could go about hacking that network? DTV and Dishnetwork are widely hacked, but I wonder how a Canuck would feel if i hacked their sat?

The satellite "bleedover" may not go too far down south in the USA, but it could happen.

The installer is coming tomorrow to install my DirecTV system. I still have cable hooked up at the moment and will still require the internet connection ($40/mo. instead of $30 if I cancel CableTV). So I will have 110 channels at $32/mo. + $40 for cable internet. That's about the same as I'm paying now for cable TV + internet. Phuck cable... I'm doing the DTV thing for sure... unless they tell me the trees out front are in the way.

I got 2 two-room DirecTV systems from Best Buy during Black Friday for $48 each... only month-to-month contract. These things are worth tons on eBay cause they have the access cards in them. I couldn't help myself when I was in the store... so now I've stumbled upon something better than cable TV + internet for the same price... and more channels.

Helpless, please find out the name of that thing. THx.

satellite sucks if:

1. You have many TV's

2. You are in a city that is too small to get local channels

DirecTV is better than cable in my area. Clearer picture and more channels for the same price. Local channels cost $5.99 and the NFL Ticket and the Cartoon Network rule. Oh yeah, if you're a computer geek, TechTV is the sh!t.
