I am about to refromat my hard drive and DO have a copy of Win 2000 pro. I use my comp for 3d gaming and net surfing. I really don't know much about win 2000 but would like to use it if it is better than win98se. Can someone give me some help here. If you think I should please tell me why and if you say NOT to do it please tell me why not. Thanks

i know some people here will flame me for this, but i was on the same boat as you are, went with the one i have a lot more understaing on. i briefly tried win2k about a year ago, didnt like it too much back then and went back to using win98. unless there had been some dramatic breakthroughs, i doubt win2k is all that. speaking of which, my roomate has win2k installed on his and i am not too fond of what i see on his computer. for web surfing and gaming, no heavy network related or 100% fail safe operating system, i would sitck with win98se.

Windows 2000 should run your games ok, and it has a lot better security than Windows 98, but it's a lot different, too, so you'd have a lot of relearing to do. If you're happy with what you've got, why change?

I would recommend that you stick with Win98SE since you're just gaming and surfing. Win2K is fairly game-friendly, but it requires some hand-holding and butt-kicking to do certain things, esp. with regards to video. You'll need to get all new drivers for your system and sometimes, there isn't one available.

I just switched to Win2K last week because I scorched my Win98 partition (dual-boot) and had to move FAST. I'm having a few problems with it, probably because I installed into a cluttered partition. I have a new HD coming t'row and I'll be install straight up Win2K on the virgin drive.

I'm doing more web and graphics work and I need to keep several apps open at once. Win98 can't keep it's resources from bleeding out and forcing a reboot, sometimes, several times a day. Gack! Win2K is more stable (my work machine stays on for a couple weeks at a time without needing a boot) and I want to take full advantage of the Def PC. (P3-1Ghz/640MB RAM/etc.)

If you don't NEED the sturdiness or don't WANT TO hassle with Win2K, then Win98SE is fine.

BETTER... did i say a lot better??? get my point?

I think everything runs faster and smoother.. no rebooting after installing something (except few) and better hardware detection and STABLE as rock...

Stick with W98 unless you are doing development, or media work, cause there is not much too be gained in the stand point of gaming or surfing with w2k. Greater security yeah, but even that is not enough of a reason to switch.

I personally have both. But I do development and CD burning on W2k and Gaming and Downloading on Win98.

Ultimately it is your decision.

<< and it has alot less bugs >>

Surely you don't think Win98SE has less bugs than Win2K?

I upgraded from Win98se to Win2k Pro (SP2). I like the stability of Win2k and the fact that you hardly ever have to reboot (certain software changes). I like Win98se because I could actually play games. Not many games run in Win2k at all.

I might set up a dual-boot to play certain games once in a while. I still have both licenses. If you want to play games, keep Win98 or setup a dual-boot. If you just want to browse and do some work, use 2000.

Yes, Win2k has less bugs than Win98se as long as you install the current Service Pack.

Check out NT Compatible to see if your games and software will work. If so, I think you will enjoy the switch to Win2k.

Btw, most of the current games DO work with Win2k.

Switch to Win 2k. More reliable, secure, and other stuff that I forgot right now because it's 2:15 in the morning.

i had win2k, got tired of always looking for compatibilities, but i hear it is better now. i have win98SE and don't have probs. i use it for internet and gaming, no development or work-related stuff so that's why i like win98SE
whatever you do, don't use ME.

why not dual boot? it really isn't hard assuming you have all the right CDs. Just install win98 and then go and install 2000. I like many have mentioned love win2000. It is so much better in the stability department. I too do lots of work with Dreamweaver and ColdFusion Studio. I used to have to reboot 2 times a day with 98, with 2K i can last weeks (unheard of with 98).

However, I have noticed problems with games in 2000. Black and White, for instance, just refuses to cooperate.

But don't forget the dual-boot option, its not as hard to do as some make it out to be, especially if you have two drives.
