Should I install Win 2000 or stick with Win98se??

I am about to refromat my hard drive and DO have a copy of Win 2000 pro. I use my comp for 3d gaming and net surfing. I really don't know much about win 2000 but would like to use it if it is better than win98se. Can someone give me some help here. If you think I should please tell me why and if you say NOT to do it please tell me why not. Thanks

If you have 128 mb of RAM or more you will be good to go. I would say that the experience that I have had with Windows 2000 Pro is MUCH BETTER than with 98. With 98 the install would get corrupted after installing a lot of different programs. With 2000 the OS looks for changes that the install makes to system files and then replaces the changes with a copy of the original file. This way things don't get messed up because a company can't write a good .dll file. For the most part, killing a problem program is a lot easier in 2000. Also, if you want ANY level of security you have to go with 2000. It has an actual logon that you can't bypass, not to mention you can lock down open program ports.

Basically, I think its a lot better than 98. Oh yeah, and its stable as hell compared to 98.

Only you can answer that question, many people will say Stick with 98 while other will say Win2k RULES.

But you're the one who will be using it & you should decide, why not dual boot for a while & find out what OS you like best?

Dude here's the deal keep 98SE Win 2000P is not designed for gaming. Although some games will work most will not and there are few games that support 2000. Microsoft reccommends 98SE for gaming.

Most games don't work????

Damn I must be seeing things when I run all my games on Win2K 😛.
OK perhaps a couple of EA-Sports 2000 titles don't work but who needs them? Most of the 2001 versions work rather nicely, or so I heard.

Another issue people state is 3D performance. This is actually driver related. If you have an Nvidia card with the latest drivers, you can expect to have no performance hit with OpenGL and a smal reduction in FPS in Direct3D. So if you play CS, UT, Q3A, Tribes2 there is no performance reason not to use W2K. You with your VooDoo is a different matter, I don't know how good the drivers are for it (I doubt that there will be any new ones soon either -thanx to Nv$d$a-)

I don't want to be without it anyways, mainly because of security and the true multi-user nature of the system...

My suggestion: Make a dual boot and get used to W2K... most gamers I know tried W2K and gave up because they got frustrated with drivers and general diffrences in system management (I gave up on the first try as well).

Seriously. No problems on the games that I have tried, and if I ever ran into a glitch the Compatibilty Update fixed that for the most part. Just make sure you are patched and you will be ok. Gaming in Win2k is so much better in my opinion cause you don't have to deal with dual boot crap and the added security and stability makes it a hands down winner to me.

NO CONTEST...

Right. I've never had a game that doesn't work on Windows 2000. Never.

I'm gonna jump on this thread b/c I'm thinking about making The Switch as well.

Does anyone pay DeusEX in W2K? I looked at the NTcompatible.com website, and DeusEx isn't listed. This is important to me as I really like this game. Thanks much.

If you have an ati card I think the win2k drivers suck
Voodoo5 with win2k rocks
I think nvidia is fairly good for win2k
I think deus ex is a ut engine game so if you have a voodoo then it would be as good if not better then 98.
Basically if all your hardware works in win2k its worth the upgrade.
If not then its obviously not. I've found very few things that don't work very well in win2k so most likely it is worth the upgrade.
I enjoy the fact that I get no BSODs, and only restart if a program install needs me to.

MichaelD....I went ahead and installed W2K and I am very happy. Especially b/c my favorite game is also Deus Ex. Not only does it WORK on W2K, it actually looks 100% better with the W2K Voodoo5 drivers. I am very happy.

You know, if you ahve any problems trying to run games under Windows 2000 and the game does not appear to run, either make sure you have SP2 or the March Compatability update installed. You will have the ability to run the game in another Kernel mode (Windows 95, 98SE, NT4 w/SP5). This will "trick" the program/game into thinking that the OS is nor Windows 2000. You will have to create a shortcut to the EXE, then modify the shortcut.

BTW, games run soooo much better in Windows 2000. Especially if you have more than 128MB installed. Also, make sure that you have DirectX 8a installed and also the latest drivers and you should be in business.
