Should I install W2K SP1?

OK I know this isn't hardware but not many people will have tried this so I need the traffic.

My system at the moment runs stably. Printing and modem dialup seem to have excessive CPU usage but I can live with it.

Should I risk installing it? Is it likely to make a mess of everything?

I'm running windows 2000 pro just fine for 9 months now. If it aren't broken, don't fix it.

yes it has numerous security and bug fixes. I reccommend you do. If you install it properly nothing should get "messed" up.

Just chose the option to backup the old files during install so that you can uninstall it if it screws up your system :)

I never trust MS to upgrade anything that ain't broken. If you're not getting hacked and desparately need the security fixes, just grab IE 5.5. I installed it when I was battling getting this thing stable, but as noted, why run the risk?

No problem here. I did it on a test machine at work and it worked fine, so I then tried it on my workstation and no glitches or anything.

I understand that SP1 kills support for software firewalls such as ZoneAlarm. Any truth to this?

After I installed W2K SP1 I couldn't get online. I have DSL and use ZoneAlarm so there may be something to what chansen says about a compatibility issue with software-based firewalls.

Fortunately I was prudent enough to do as Wizkid recommended. I backed up the old files during the installation, which enabled me to uninstall SP1.

Win2K SP1 is fine for me. The only issue which can come up is with firewall software like ZoneAlarm. Either you need to change your Internet Security settings, or get the latest patch for ZoneAlarm.
