Should I have to F Disk every 3 months?

After about three months my computer completely slows down, everything from loading applications to shutting down, i now have to hibernate because i cant trust it to shut down on its own. It happens time and time again and the only way i have found to get it back to full speed is wipe the HDD and a clean install of XP Pro. My system specs are:

XP 1600+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
256mb DDR 2100
Radeon 9700 pro
20GB Maxtor

Windows XP Pro

Its getting stupid, i really could do with not having the hassle and expense of backing up all my files and reinstalling everything, it to me seems a waste of time when i feel it shouldnt be doing it. I run system cleanup every week and defrag when it says i need to (Running analysis every 2 weeks) I have pretty much had a new system except for the HDD and Processor and still nothings change. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have lots of ghosts😉....but im not looking for an easier way to f disk im looking to cure whatever is causing me to have to f disk every three months.....

Check sysem processes in Task Manager. I'll bet you will find a multitude of gimmicky "crap" programs that are soaking up system resources. Run msconfig, check your startup list, and uncheck the junk.

Run through the XP tweaks here.

Be sure to unload or get rid of superfluous programs, and defragment at least once a month.

All that should keep you running rather smoothly.

Thanks guys, Jefferey, it does it under '98 as well, dkozloski the only program that uses any power regualrly is seti at home, and it did it even before i got seti. Just a thought but could this be a build up of junk files that scandisk doesnt get rid of? I heard that dead ends in the registry also slow it down, could this have something to do with it? Thanks Alphazero ill check it out. Thanks for the imput guys!

I actually use the XP CD, i use it to delete the existing partition, reformat the HDD and make a new partition to reinstall XP, Maybe i should say i have to have a clean install of XP every 3 months. Sorry

Just a shot in the dark, but how much free space is left on your drive? I have heard of IDE drives slowing down quite a bit when they start getting full. Also, the drives do not defragment well when there is little free space. Maybe this could be the problem. Try clearing up some space and defragging.

I would try to run something like spybot and regcleaner to make sure nothings clogging resources/giving the OS problems.

Or, maybe you just got a bad drive.

Hope some of this helps.

For some reason around here, the favorite answer to every problem is to reformat/reinstall.

I've NEVER had to reformat or reinstall an OS. I've been "doing" computers professionally now for 15 years (and in school before that). The only time I ever use fdisk is when I'm installing a new disk. The only time I ever install an OS is when I'm setting up a new 'puter.

What am I doing wrong that I don't have to go through all this fun on a regular (weekly/monthly/quarterly) basis like everybody else? If you keep your computer "clean" , don't d/l a bunch of crap, keep your firewall on and your virus-scanner up-to-date, there's no reason for problems like this.

OZEE If you read my initial question you would realise that a fresh install of XP is not my favourite answer it is as of yet my only answer. That is why i am asking on here. So please before you start hacking my methods of curing problems to bits do take my question in the context it was meant.

are you inadvertantly running programs that you don't know about? what do you do with your computer? are you accessing the internet a lot? are you using kazaa?

I use kazaa lite, seti@home, some digital camera software, winamp agent, ati software, pccillin, msn messenger, yahoo messenger . Im connected to the internet whenever im at home but i have the xp firewall Thats about all.

Don't use all theat stuff. You gotta cut down. You're probably running a whole bunch of other programs too that you don't know about.

That's actually quite a bit on 256MB + XP. Maybe it's a lack of RAM? PC2100 cheap (256MB<$30), you may want to look into getting another stick. Other than that, I'd still recommend running spybot and regcleaner. You may find alot of junk loading and running in the background, things you may have uninstalled still appearing in the registry, etc.
