Should I have complained? Car really dirty after being serviced

I took my car into the dealership to get serviced. After it was done, they put it outside with one of the windows rolled down halfway because its about 105 degrees out. Good intentions I suppose. A dust storm blew in and my car sat out there for about 5 hours collecting dust. The inside of my car is entirely covered in dust. Everything, every nook and cranny is covered in dust. Its going to take me hours and hours to get this car clean. When I turned on my radio, a puff of dust came off my speakers. Blegh.

Should I have demanded that they pay for me to get my car detailed?

I wouldn't demand, but I would talk calmly to them to see if there is anything they can do - it can't hurt to ask.

Yes... I'm sure they have their own detailers who would do it actually.

I would bring it up with the supervisor/manager of service department

Pep Boys spilled coffee inside my car after an inspection. They said I had a coffee cup in there and it was spilled before they got in the car, though I don't take a cup of coffee to work as we have an espresso machine in our office (yeah it's awesome). Douche bags would do nothing about it... not a penny of compensation.

It was the last time I took my car there for anything.

I would too... but only if asking nicely and reasonably didn't work first. No need to go in all guns firing.

Kick the service manager in the jimmies and drop the "F" bomb repeatedly. If that doesn't work apply throathold to cute receptionist and tell them she will die unless they detail your car.

It works every time.

Hot or not, no mechanic should ever leave a car sit on their lot with the windows open. Too much potential for something to happen. They ought to pay for the detailing in this case and, if it were me, they would not be getting my business ever again.

That much dust can cause reliability issues down the road as well. It's in the tracks for your seats, it's inside your radio and other electronics, it's inside your steering column and inside the linkages for the pedals and the gearshift, inside the switches for the power windows... The only way to actually make the car completely right, as it was before the dust storm, is to completely dis-assemble the interior when it's cleaned, including removing the dash, etc. There's no way they'll do that, but IMO the car is essentially irreparably damaged in the sense that it will see a reduction in service life from this.

Yup. And most dealerships would probably want to keep your service as having your around increases the chances that hey...next car you buy will be from there!

I would think the dealership would be willing to work with you on this. Most have in-house detailing, so they could take care of it themselves. It was obviously a mistake on their part and they didn't plan on the dust storm rolling through, but it would be good of them to make sure they return the car in a condition that meets or exceeds that which you left it.

They are responsible for what happened. They put the window down. They should have put it up when the dust storm rolled in to prevent damage. They didn't, so...
