I am originally going for a Celeron D processor, but I wanted to know what you guys thought about it. Is the Celeron D processor good for stuff like video editing and possibly gaming?

Celeron D 335 is the actual processor I might buy.

Well, a Sempron would be a better choice on a budget, but the new Celeron D's are okay. Much better than the previous P4 Celerons.

If a celeron 335 is as much as you are willing to spend, your only other options would be from the XP line
I think the guy above is refering to the sempron 3100+ which is miles better but its not the same price...if u can make your buget strech it will be worth it

I'd try a Barton (a mobile if you don't mind OCing) or a low-cost 754, if you can stretch the budget for that.

Depends if you're re-using older, slower RAM. If you're getting new DDR400, I'd recommend a cheap Sempron setup with a motherboard 400FSB capable. The 20% boost in speed is almost guaranteed! :)

AND it's dirt cheap! Cheaper than a Celeron D!

Do you live in the vicinity of a Fry's. They have deals on cpu/motherboard combos that are well below the $100 dollar mark. Often with processors that include Athlon XP, Sempron, Celeron D and so on. But the MOBO may not be your first choice, it's often an ECS (Elite Group) MOBO.

Well, Sempron allows you to move up to 64 bitness when it comes around.

Well.....I just put together a Celeron D 325 on a Biostar P4VMA-M motherboard with
512 Kingston RAM and using the onboard video.
It went together easily and XP Pro installed without a hitch.
It's pleanty fast for me as I just use it for internet and work processing, very little gaming.
But.....it has the AGP 8x slot for future video upgrades AND the MB takes Prescott processors....

Really!

You can't get a Sempron and then later replace it with an A64? I coulda sworn I could get an S754 Sempron and then drop an S754 A64 in later.

Boy am I dumb!

Those folks at Newegg are dumb too. Lying about having S754 Semprons in stock! Imagine that! I am going to fire off an e-mail immediately about this fraud!

Hahaha, yeah I agree with homedude, get a Sempron 3100 and OC the crap out of it, you will get GREAT results, better than a 3400+ when OCed to 2.5. Thats some bang for the buck.

From NewEgg:
Sempron 3100 $128
Chaintech MB $ 65
Apollo GF 4000 $ 35
total $228
.
My Celeron D and MB = $134
.
I just didn't have the extra $$$ at the time.
BTW: I've got 2 other builds in the past year, a 1800 Athlon, and a 2500 Athlon Barton.
I like all processors...........

The A64 2800+ is a pretty good performer for like $140, a bit steep, but a hell of a lot better.
