Should I go to my company's picnic?

I just started working at this company about 2 months ago, and this Saturday they are having a company picnic. I don't know too many people here, just the office staff. I only know a few people from the warehouse.

Would it look bad if I don't go? I forgot what the rules of ethics are for these things. Someone please shed some light on this for me.

Drop in, it would be good to at least make an appearance, and it is a good opportunity to meet others in your office.

Not going makes you look odd at best.

If it was during work hours or right after work maybe, but I've always found that these weekend type of things always end-up to be family oriented with lots of kids and stuff. Since I don't have kids, I pass.

I've been with my current company for about 6 months, and although I've met and worked with plenty of people, I would'nt say I "know" many people.

Our company picnic was last week and I decided to go anyways. At first it was a bit awkward; I just walked around, drank a beer, and ate some burgers and hot dogs. I ended up hanging out with some people I recently worked with. After a few beers, we were having a great time chatting. I ended up being dragged away with a different group of people into another conversation for a few hours. I had a great time, and I am more familiar with people now than I would be if I hadn't gone.

Yea that's the thing I'm not really looking too forward to. My dad is coming up on Sunday after being out of the country, but I don't know if prepping for him on Saturday is a good reason not to go.

So ATOT vote is that I should stop by, have a beer or two then bounce?

I'd say definitely go ... I start a new job June 9th, and the annual golf tournament is June 11th! Fortunately I'm a competent golfer, but I figure I'll be meeting many of the people for the first time that afternoon :)

I skipped my current job's Christmas party a week after I started in my first year, and I still regret it for not having been able to meet some co-workers in a social situation.

Can't hurt anything. Be friendly and try to make some connections.

I guess you're right. I'll consider it a free lunch and free entertainment
