Well, ive been looking to upgrade my computer. I want a **small** upgrade at <100$ hopefully.

Currently waiting on RMA for my motherboard, so I have nothing to do but contemplate upgrades. I feel like SSD is a good upgrade right now. I would love to speed up Windows by running off SSD. I use the PC mainly for gaming, with a little multimedia also.

Current specs:
Q6600 @ 3.4 (will change with RMA'd Mobo)
XFX 680i LT (Not sure what ill get as replacement)
Seagate 320GB 7200RPM
Seagate 1.5TB 7200RPM
6GB OCZ PC6400.
8800GT SC

So, do you guys think SSD is worthwhile? What do you recommend?

If you dont recommend SSD.. why not, what would you recommend upgrading?

The technology is still new and there are still problems with the controllers being used. I've also heard their performance sails off a cliff. I think it was N7 who reported this.

take my advice like a grain of salt
 
save the SSD for your laptop. IMO they don't have any business on desktops at the moment.

while certain things, such as launching certain apps, feel speedier, the overall system performance will not justify the $/GB, not even close.


but, there are many good reasons to put SSDs on laptops.

This is why I don't really like these forums...he obviously was wondering, with his PC's specs, is it worth it to upgrade. Not looking for a post about a i7 965 at 10GHz...he doesn't have that.

I'd say it's worth it, I noticed a huge increase in speed in Windows boot time with my OCZ drive.

I can't imagine needing to shave even a half minute off the boot time. With a VelociRaptor I'm already always first into games like COD4... and then I have to wait for the countdown timer anyways.

Until SSDs are proven to be consistent in their high performance, I'll stick to (Veloci)Raptors.

Cool.. thanks. Your advice really helped me. I didnt find anyone in the same situation as me, thus.. there was no useful advice.

This is the kind of advice im looking for.. I dont have a Raptor or Velociraptor, so would it be justifiable to buy an SSD for OS/ some games?

I have responded to at least two threads on this forum where people were asking/discussing whether it is worth it.
But you are right. Why do any work yourself if you can find someone less smart to do it for you?

I agree, if all we did was search for older topics rather than post newer, more relevant info people would get a lot less help... which is the whole point of forums in the first place. If you don't want to see posts about topics that have been covered in the past........don't open the thread.

ANYWAY, short end of it, to your topic at least, as a G Skill Titan owner I can attest that the long term results of these drives leaves much to be desired(at least with me). The one thing that I can take from all of the back and forth about how good or bad SSD's are is that a cheap 640 gb WD Black can be had for about $80, and perform as well as one might really need in the grand scheme of things. At more than a third of the cost of MY SSD and more than 5 times the storage is IMO the far better choice. Do yourself a favor and reap the benefits of a product that has developed thoroughly throughout it's life cycle. BTW my SSD studders in just about every operation now. It was gradual, but at this point I cant wait to put this baby on Craigslist (no newegg RMA for me....)

At this point in time, I would recommend you selling your current graphics card and then using that money on top of the ~$100 you were willing to spend on a SSD.
 
What kind of GPU would be a good upgrade then? Im running 1680x1050..

Any idea what i could sell a used 8800GT for? lol

I agree with Zap here.I thought about going the SSD route but found these VelociRaptors on sale and set up RAID O. As with COD4 I play BF2 and am almost always first on the maps.

 
For < $100, I wouldn't do it. I think the SSD's guys here say are 'unproven' would be the likes of the OCZ, GSkill and the like that use the jmicron controller. If you check out the Intel X25 specs and performance reviews, I think you'll be compelled to spend more for that drive. I've been using the X25 for 3 mo's now, and while I like it a lot more than my previous drive (Raptor 74g), I wouldn't say it was worth the $425 I spent for it.

Have you noticed any slowdowns? The current price is decent but given the recent articles on fragmentation due to the intel controller im worried about jumping on the ship.
