Proprioceptive,

Do not use the Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard with the Lian-Li V-1000B case because this MB uses a heat pipe for passive cooling while your case mounts the MB upside down. It's not recommended to use a MB that uses a heat pipe with this type of case. Switch to the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe MB which uses a conventional chipset cooling fan.

I have a Lian-Li V-1000B case and love it.

I know absolutely nothing about Opteron processors to tell you the truth. I dont' know how to overclock either. I'm definitely willing to learn, though.

The Opterons are architecturally the same as the X2's. The only difference is they overclock better and they all come with the same amount of cache. Also, overclocking may be hard to understand at first, but once you get started you will see how easy it is.

If I overclocked this Opteron 165 like you say, would I be able to get the performance I originally wanted out of the 4800?

Yes, most Opterons I have seen get at least 2.6GHz.

Awesome... definitely overlooked that. Thanks.

i only read the first few posts but i hate how in many forums the OP is asking for help between 2 products and a reader would post something thats completely not even considered (problaby for a reason). for example this forum where the OP is asking 4800 or fx 60, someone would oftem come around and suggest an opteron. or another withthe PSU's.
/rant

OP i was in the same scenario as you with cpus. i chose the 4800 because you will barely notice a difference in performance in 200mhz in clock speed difference. save $300-400 and get something else. concerning your original motherboard the asua a8n premium, i have read in too many situations that the northbridge will overheat when mounted upside down in the case. unless you're going to get a diff motherboard or a difference northbridge cooler.

What is wrong with that? I was giving him good advice so he wouldn't waste his money. Since he is overclocking the 4800+ X2 is a complete waste.

I appreciate both sides. Sometimes people do get away from what the OP wanted, but in this case it was definitely a welcome bit of advice.

I started another thread, but I guess I should put it in here as well. Anyone know how I can delete the other thread? Anyways, here it is:

I really appreciate the help I've gotten in here so far, and I'm still looking for ideas. Below is an update:

Lian-Li V-1000B (opted against PLUS because of loud extra fans)
LANPARTY UT RDX200 CF-DR (originally A8N-SLI Premium)
Opteron 170 (originally X2 4800... but I'm still up in the air)
Enermax Liberty 620watt
OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Dual Channel Platinum(2gb) (Orignally CorsairTwinX2048 3500LLPRO)
ATI Radeon X1900 CrossFire Edition 512mb x2 crossfire (originally eVGA e-GeForce7800GTX KO 256mb (2 in SLI))
Soundblaster x-fi Xtrememusic

Zalman REserator 1 Plus (adding another VGA block for second GPU)
WD Rapter 150GB
WD Caviar RE16 400GB (2 of these)

Plextor PX-716AL DVD/CD Writer (2 of these... want to be able to do disc to disc writing and I really like the slot look... plus good drives)

Hauppauge 500 MCE (I'm also looking at the Adaptec PVR 3610 [USB])

Windows MCE 2005
Dell 2405fpw (2407fpw if it comes out soon, or I may just use my existing monitor and wait... HDCP SUCKS!)

APC 750VA UPS battery backup
Gyration Ultra Cordless Optical Mouse

Thanks for all the help and I look forward to more advice.

I decided to go with an Opteron 170. If you read three entries before this one, you'll see that I updated my configuration. I'll put it here again, though.

Also, to asnwer member "fx", I'm picking that mouse for my wrist. I have kind of a bad wrist which I'm rehabiliating and having a gyroscopic mouse woudl help me out. Also, as far as your mobo suggestion goes, I may actually switch over to that, but only if I decide to do a USB TV tuner. If I use the Hauppauge and the X-fi card, I wont have room for them both, especially with the space the X1900s take up.
