I'm getting an unlocked duron which allegedly will hit 1GHZ. I'm going to throw it on a ABIT KT7. I originally intented for it to be a server, but now I'm thinking otherwise. I have a p3-650@866 as my machine right now with 256MB pc-133 running win2k pro. Should I use the Duron 1Ghz with 384 megs pc-100 as my primary machine or the p3-866 with 256megs pc-133? I have a geforce2 so I don't know about any remaining incompatabilities. Also, will the memory and fsb run asynchronously on the KT7? I might be able to find more pc-133. Thanks.

WIn2000wise

from what i know
the Intel system seems to be more 'stable' as there are a few driver cliches with VIA on windows 2000

I would take the 866 for now as the primary system

then use the 1G Duron when all the drivers issues are fixed

256MB should be enough...

Running with only IE open and me typing in the forums my task manager shows about 64MB in use in Win2k
So you have 192MB left to run whatever, so that should be plenty.

A KT7 will run the Athlon/Duron FSB bus at 100Mhz DDR always and the memory at either 100 or 133Mhz SDR.

As for Duron 1Ghz vs P3-866 that's a tough call...Win2000 likes my Asus K7M (AMD north, Via south) just fine.

But I'd take the 256MB PC133 in either machine.
