Yah replace everything in your system, and when that doesn't work, replace the mobo :D

I say just start at the other end, replace the mobo first. :Q

i'm about to head over to Fry's this weekend and do just that.

Same model or a new one?

gonna try my hand at a different model. SOmething in the same price range though (60-70 bucks). Biostar M7VIG-Pro, Asus A7N-266m, shuttle ak32 or something. I'll see what they have. Definately not going to try another one of these.

ahahaha :D

I'm very happy with my nforce2 board and the original nforces were pretty good. Maybe try that first.

let us know if it fixes your problems. :D

RE:"You can turn off the reboot on error. This way you can see the actual error. This can greatly help in finding the culprit.
This seems more of an OS issue than a MB issue"

Good idea.

Any of the nforce2 boards with the SPP northbridge will not have onboard video. After that its deciding what you want in the Southbridge (MCP or MCP-T). T has the soundstorm 5.1 onboard sound (very good, about the same as Audigy), firewire, and 2nd LAN support. The Epox 8RDA+ is the cheapest I believe with the MCP-T southbridge.

thanks for the suggestion. I have been out of the loop as far as chipsets and such since i last bought a motherboard, and that was an Abit kt7a. I have NO idea what direction i'm headed!

I have an Epox 8K7A motherboard that had exactly the same problem. Whenever I'm typing, playing CS, surfing, emailing .. the system would all of a sudden reboot!

The memory I used was also generic and high density using the Elixir chipset - 512 MB (got it from a Best Buy K-byte deal).

I tested the memory on another system running SiSoft and memtest86 without a hitch on another 8k7a.

After the RMA, the board works perfectly w/o a problem with the same generic memory.

Two of the most frequent causes of problems are inadequate power supply and overheating of the chipset (it turns out ECS used doublesided "non-thermal" tape to attach it's heatsink.) See:

I've tried the heatsink mod before and it does significantly reduce lockups, but I would still get them if I ran prime95 long enough.

I have tried changeing BIOS , power supplies, and redone the heatsink cooling and it still locks up less but it still does. I am giving up on it and shopping for something else . I won't recommend the K7s5a to anyone , its just not worth time involved trying to make it work properly - assuming you can .
