Should I get this RAM for my A64?

Hmm...I currently have an AMD64 4000+ on the way, and I'm wondering if this RAM should suffice. I'll be looking to get 2GBs of it (I do a LOT of alt-tabbing/multi-tasking, and newer games are starting to take more and more of it...).

Are you overclocking at all?

If not, you might want to get 2 sticks of this instead - crucial 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory - OEM

They will also OC pretty well. Crucial tests

4x512 is fine if you are willing to drop from 1T to 2T. Many people will dissuade you from this, but tests conducted in real-time have showed only a 1-5% decrease in performance, which you can probably make up by OC'ing the FSB/RAM further if you are into that. 1T vs 2T?

I would personally go for 4 sticks of cheap 512 Low Latency ram and expect to run a divider. More on cheap ram and dividers here.

A whole plethora of options!! Those links on dividers and 1T vs 2T really answered all my questions concerning memory. Good reading.

Whoops, I forgot to mention some things. Thanks for the great post muddled.

First off I'm in Toronto (Canada), so the site I listed was in CDN dollars, as well Newegg doesn't ship over. Secondly I'm not going to be in it for overclocking. I used to o/c my T-bird back in the day, but I highly doubt I'll be overclocking any components of my new computer anytime soon. If I do, it won't be

I'm not looking to drop to 2T...it was my understanding that with the newer cores the memory 'bug' for 4 DIMMs was fixed? (Or does that depend on the motherboard too?). The 4000+ I'm getting is a 90nm 'San Diego'.

As well, I believe it was on HardOCP or somewhere, that there was a test done for 2-2-2-5 RAM vs. 2.5-3-3-6 RAM...I believe the results were somewhere between 3-5% faster in FPS, which doesn't exactly make me want to spend the extra money.

The other RAM I was looking at was the OCZ EL.

no 512mb is always double sided so yuo will be froced to use 2t. buy 2x 1gb to use 1t.

the only difference is that you don't have to run pc400 at 333mhz now with 4 sticks.

Hmm, alright, perhaps it was with 4 single-sided sticks still...meh.
I'm just sorta scared about the CL3...I've had 'value' RAM (3-4-4-8) in my girl's A64 and...ever since swapping it out for OCZ Performance v2 (2.5-3-3-6), pretty much everything feels more responsive, and tasks switch more quickly. That's sorta the point I'm wondering about...I could care less if I get 10 fps more in DOOM3 or Battlefield 2...I do care if it takes a few more seconds to alt-tab out to FireFox from BF2 and back...
