my old computer( a q6600 with 3 gb of ram pc) is having problems with the usb's, the usb's never work in windows 7, one of the ports use to work and to get the others working, i would have to uninstall the other usb drivers, and then all the ports work but then my capture card doesn't work(a hauppauge colossus, internal pci-e x1). and now none of the ports work in the os, and sometimes during the start up of the computer. so i have decide to get a new pc, here are the parts:

this computer will be used for 3d animation rendering, video rendering, basic tasks like: internet browsing, email, homework. a little gaming

Coolermaster Haf 912 Black Mid Tower

Coolermaster R4-L2R-20 120MM Red LED Case Fan 2000RPM

Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3

Intel Core i5 2500k

Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus

Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto 8GB 2X4GB PC3-10666 DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit

i am getting all the parts form ncix.com canada

i will be using parts from my other computer, like the dvd drive, gpu (9800 gtx+), hauppauge colossus, i also have a gs 8400( or something like that gpu from nvidia, it cam e with my old computer but then i swapped it for 9800). also the power supply is a cheap 650 watt i think, i think it should be sufficient to power everything. i will be using 2x320 gb hdd and one ssd

the parts plus shipping($22.00) + tax($77.00) cost $621.00

is it worth it, if not what should i get, i am going to university or college in a year or 2(not sure if it matters).

and any overclocking advice

thanks for any help

This is a dual post. There are already replies to it in Computer Help. Cross posting between forums is a no-no.

So you just reposted it? Could've informed a mod to move it.

The CPU, its cooler, the RAM, and the case are all great.

The Gigabyte board is a dual vid card compatible board at USD 150, which isn't bad by any means. Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 is a dual card compatible board at USD 120, but it means you get only 2 years of warranty instead of 3, and no front-panel USB3. I think Asrock is a bit better for the price. If you want to save more you could forget about SLI/Crossfire compatibility and get Asrock Z68 Pro3 for USD 105 (newegg prices).

For CM 912, you have a couple of ways you can design the airflow. From newegg:

Cooling System:
-Front: 120 mm fan x 2, 1200 RPM, 17 dBA (one is optional, can be swapped for one 200mm fan)
-Top: 120 mm fan x 2 or 200mm fan x 1(optional)
-Rear: 120 mm fan x 1, 1200 RPM, 17 dBA
-Side:120/140 mm fan x 1 (optional)
As you see, you already have two 120mm fans, and I think that's enough for your system. If you want to improve your airflow, you should take out the existing 120mm front fan, put it to the rear top slot, and buy a 200mm fan (this or this) to install on the front. You should not put the 200mm fan to the top slot, because that will only achieve negative air pressure inside the case. Positive air pressure achieves better cooling and will reduce dust buildup. Your GPU should not need a fan on the side of the case.

I would recommend against 2000rpm 120mm fans. Running that at full 12 volts will be loud - best keep it at 1500rpm and under. (I run my fans at ~400-600rpm cos I don't want a lot of noise.)

and any overclocking advice
Here you go

thanks for the reply, i won't get the 2x120 mm fans, i'll get one 200mm fan, also the fan that was at the front, the 120 mm one, i put that at the top, does it matter which way i put it, or is there only 1 way, if there is 2 ways, which way do i put it, hot air rises, so make it an exhaust. i was look at both of the mother boards u suggested but z68 extreme 3 gen 3 is $150 canadian, and the z68 pro3 is $130 canadian, i am getting the gigabyte z68xp-ud3 for $135 with a $10 rebate, would you say that is a good deal. also if i get a Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3, i can get the 2500k for $199, i am paying 240 for it right now

Yeah the top fan should be an exhaust just like the rear fan.

Yes, that board seems to be better than the Asrocks

also if i get a Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3, i can get the 2500k for $199, i am paying 240 for it right now
Even better. That's only $330 for mobo+CPU! Scrap the Z68XP-UD3. That board does lack front panel USB3 but (I only realize this now) HAF 912 doesn't support USB3 so that's irrelevant unless you change your case.

is it worth it, if not what should i get,
* Please don't use your old "cheap 650 watt" PS.
It's false economy to build a shiny new system behind an old cheap PS.
Put wattage numbers out of your mind when thinking about your old PS.
* "is it worth it"? You and you alone are the only one in these forums that can answer that question. All we can offer are opinions (everyone has one).
At the end of the day, it's your money situation, your tasks being completed, your estimation of whether the performance gained is worth the $$ spent.

Using www.shopbot.ca you can pricematch those same parts for a total of $459
Then you can buy a nice Seasonic, XFX or Antec power supply and be within your budget.

Edit, I mean you can find lower prices using shopbot and then use NCIX pricematch.

Edit #2, if you're going with the Z68A-D3H-B3 instead, total is $22 less.

For the power supplies, you can get
Seasonic 560w $107 or Seasonic 650w for $137, some of the best power supplies you can get these days.
XFX and Antec both offer 80Plus/Bronze certified 650w PSU for $60 too, both great power supplies but not necessarily as high quality as the Seasonics. Any of these will be better and much safer for your new system than "some cheap 650w" one.

medium

benefits: knowing that you PSU wont die on you at any moment
Will be more reliable
You HEC one may not reach 585 watts.
knowing that your PSU wont blow up or anything

also
It lacks some of the active protection and higher-quality capacitors a more expensive unit has, so I will still be replacing it shortly, but this'll be a solid back-up.
I LOVE this PSU
Its modular, its 80+ certified, and its an Antec

yeah. 550 watts is more than enough

the one you posted is good alright, the Antec Green series works wonderfully

BUT its not modular.

either more efficiency (due to the fact that its has more power) or the case being neat/ less wires (modular)
