I am wandering if I should get a sempron 2600+ and 512 pc3200(generic) Total $130

or

purchase a A64 2800+ and use my PC2100 to build a spare system. Total $120 (ram later)

I have a very nice DFI and A64 system that I use primarily. I have a spare Chaintech VNF3 just sitting in the box. I have every thing to build a system but the CPU.

Chances are that this system will sit idle most of the time. It will be a loaner for friends when I fix their systems, or a back up for my system.

Is the sempron really going to be slow or will it be unnoticable when using office, browsing and emailing?

My 2500 Barton system seems to hold its own on these types of tasks. I have the barton and a64 systems both on using a KVM. I know a crazy way to multitask.

If I was you I'd buy the sempron and use the PC2100 if all its ever gonna get used for is browsing the internet and stuff like that. Seems like an overkill to buy an Athlon64 for that unless you just wanna buy one for the heck of it then by all means go for it.

I have about $130 to spend, I just sold an Athlon XP 2200 computer. So I was going to drop the money into the Chaintech. I will probably sell the computer some time in the future 3-6 months. That will pay for the 939 upgrade. It might replace my Barton 2500. I keep two computers around. I install apps and experiment on the older one before making any changes to my main computer. Having two Nforce3 motherboards will simpify the whole process.

If its just for experimentation, the sempron should do fine, but the A64 should be worth more later.

I think I will unload the barton and go with the A64 and some nice ram.

I will put that in my DFI and the a64 3000+ I have in the Chaintech.

they should both be solid computers.

Thanks all for the help everyone.

Avalon. I had been watch your adventure with OC'ng the sempron. Good luck squeezing out every MHZ.

I agree the chaintech is not the best ocer and to get the 2600+ up to the performance level of the 2800+ you will have to oc a bit....pc2100 and a not so good ocing mobo...A64 all the way...
