Should I get Socket 754 now or 939 in a few months?

If the 939 will be out by feb of next year or so I would go with that but it seems as if it wont be by then. I see now that the 3000+ are starting to hit stores and pair that with a 754 motherboard theyre becoming quite attractive. So the question is should I stick itout or go cheap now and get another cheap one later. I wont ever be going highend on the CPU (Ie FX) because I dont buy the top of the line on anything computers with the way technology is.

It's up to you, the 939 parts will be faster than the 754 parts because of the dual memory controllers. That also means they'll be more expensive. Personally, I'm waiting for more information on how they overclock, and waiting to see some good steppings and whatnot... not to mention a 64-bit version of Windows.

mostly what jeff said, i'm waiting for 939 myself because i think it will last longer than a 754. plus i'm waiting till they come out with their 90nm chips, see if they are better at overclocking

I am waiting for a quality motherboard/chipset that can overclock these guys a little further than they are going at the moment. I would say wait for the 939 version and see what difference it makes, or check out the new A64 3000+ chips with a SIS 755 chipset, that might be an economical plan that will yield great performance results!

939 pin sockets should last on the roadmap alot farther. So if you want to jump on it early, but try to futureproof your machine, 939 is the way to go, because after 939 comes out 754 pin I think is going to be considered the "Duron" of the AMD64 platform.

Also, something to consider, VIA and SiS are both introducing PCI Express chipsets in about 2 months time (VIA is already sampling them), which coincides with the 939 pin timeframe. I would expect that if you hold out for a 939 pin board, you'll be getting a PCI Express chipset, rather than an AGP/PCI board, meaning more futureproofing - since both ATi and NVIDIA are committing themselves to PCI Express.

I'm waiting for 939 due to the ECC memory requirement of 940 and the longevity this will bring ot the A64 platform (I hope).
