Should I get PC2700 DDR?

I just killed a stick of Crucial 256mb ddr ram. I called crucial and they told me that overclocking voids the warranty, so I'm thinking of buying a stick of PC2700 instead. I want to run at least at fsb 150mhz. Do you think a stick of pc2700 is worth it?

Why don't you just tell them the memory is not working, they'd say it's bad and give you replacement.

Buy real PC2700 memory, not those higher price pre-tested so-called PC2700 memory.

<< No I did overclock it!!! >>

a little slow on the uptake, huh? ;) just don't tell them that.

How do you think they will find out if you overclock it? Exactly, they won't, unless you fry it or something.

Crucial would not know if I lied or withheld the truth or anything like that, but I would and I don't want them to pay for something I broke. That just ain't right.

You may just want to rma that and get another stick...Many have successfully got to 150fsb with crucial memory. It is a great little overclocker. Many need to adjust voltage supplied to the ddr to get it to be 100 percent stable.

I have overclocked memory too high and it usually just doesn't post and I reset bios and it fires up...Hmm you killed it huh???

I think you got a bad stick...

See what happened was that I was away from the PC and I used the REmote Desktop Feature of WIndows XP along with CPUCool to change the FSB through software. That's probably what wrecked the RAM.

I have two sticks of 256 meg Crucial PC2100 (cl 2.5). They run at 150 fsb -- cl2 -- rock stable. And I can take them to 160 at cl 2.5. Haven't gone higher as my system craps out past 160.

This is on an Epox 8k7a btw.

I still find it unlikely...I have overclocked the fsb in cpucool and it just froze...I hard restarted it and the bios kicked back in with settings and I was fine...

Did it not restart? Did you have the setting to set it back to that too high fsb each time during start-up? Maybe force go into safe mode and disable cpucool at startup...

Ok, I tried everything...i set the fsb to 133, 100, nothing worked. The POST failed with a "memory test fail" error. Safe mode doesn't work...nothing works. It won't even start up most times. And yesterday I found a resistor or small capacitor from the stick fall off. I'll just buy another stick and not use CPUCool anymore. I used CPUCool a lot...and it didn't freeze, it worked so I think the change back and forth mighta screwed it up.

It sucks that memory is now $58 or so instead of $42 when I bought.

<< Where can I get "real" PC2700? >>

KingMax is the only one that makes it to the market this time.

The Winbond and Nanya PC2700 have been anounced, but no one is selling them yet.

First off, I admire russr's character. I'd like to think I'd do the same. He's not slow, he's honest.

Second, I just bought some OCZ PC2700. I haven't installed it yet. That's my Christmas holiday project.......new mobo, RAM, vid card and FINALLY getting away from 98SE! :D

I'll post my results in a few weeks. :)

Maggotry, thanks for the compliment...

I think Crucial RAM is probably just as good as OCZ right?

<< oh no!!! you guys are considering OCZ PC2700!!!
please do a research on OCZ first.
>>

King, can you provide some linkage to bad OCZ reviews?

Thanks!

i guess 333 is out now...... the article is dated but explains it good

Compatiable with the latest Intel P4 and AMD Motherboards...
ABIT--SD7, SD7 Plus

ASUS--P4S333, P4S333-FX
BIOSTAR--M7SXF, M7SXR, M7SXG, M7SX
CHAINTECH--9SID, 9SJD, 9SID1
ECS--L4S5M, L4S5MG, K7S6A
EPoX--4SDA
Gigabyte--GA-8SDX3, GA-8SRX
Iwill--XP333, XP333-R (ALi MAGiK 1 M1647 C-version)
JETWAY--S445R, S445
MSI--M6547, M6559, M6524, M6558
SOYO--P4S Dragon Ultra
*Also work in AMD platform motherboards which use SIS740/745, VIA P4X266, ALi MAGiK 1 & Intel P4 845D, SIS645/650 chipsets.
*This high quality memory is compatible with all computers using DDR standard, but is not backward-compatible with SDRAM such as PC66, PC100, PC133, PC150, and requires motherboards and systems especially designed for DDR266 and DDR333.

I have seen no review, but there are several post at the forum that users were not happy with the OCZ memory.

You can check the marking on chips of your PC2700 and see if it is real DDR333 chips. If you get OCZ, the chance is that they are not. Someone has reported that their OCZ PC2700 had Micron or Hynix DDR266A, which is slightly better than DDR266B, but nowhere near DDR333.

The Hynix chip should be one or two more digits at the end of the marking to show the chip speed. For example:

HY5DU28822AT-XX

The XX corresponds to:
33 : 300MHz
4 : 250MHz
43 : 233MHz
45 : 222MHz
5 : 200MHz
55 : 183MHz
6 : 166MHz
K : DDR266A
H : DDR266B
L : DDR200

You can get more info on Hynix DDR numbering system here.

russr, I commend you on your honesty, I agree whole heartedly. If I abuse it or break it, I don't get the vendor or manufacturer to pay, it is my loss. If you are only going to run a 150MHz fsb, than don't pay extra. I have tested OCZ PC2400, Corsair PC2400, and stock Crucial PC2100 and they all ran faster than 166MHz at cas 2 at 2.9v. The Crucial was actually the cheapest and fastest.
