Should I get paid for this?

My girlfriend is an accountant who works for a C.P.A. and she was told that he(C.P.A.) would like it if she took a class at the local Community College to learn Quickbooks Pro. He said he would pay the $180 tuition and the class is from 8 to 12 for 8 Saturdays consecutively. I feel that she should get compensated in some way for her time that she attends class, either her hourly pay while in the class or a guaranteed raise upon completion. What do you think?

Naw, I don't think so. He's paying for the class; I don't see why he should have to go above and beyond that. He shouldn't get mad if she refuses to take the class though.

I wish my company would pay for me to take classes on Saturday.

I would expect to be paid for working hours that I normally don't work, even if it was training.

He is paying her compensation, he is paying for the class. If she doesn't want to take it, she shouldn't have to.

The training itself is a valuable asset especially in that line of work, and I would see him paying for that as adequate compensation. It also may be chips and the bargaining table for a raise in the future.

I dont think he is entitled to pay her any extra since he is footing the bill.

Personally I think if it has to do with the business and she isn't doing it for her own reasons, they should pay her every hour she sits in that class. She isn't doing it for her own good, it's for her employer. Therefore, she should get paid.

Then again, this coming from the guy who gets paid while flying down to our other office for tech work.

The way I look at it is I've got better things to do with my time than walking through airports. Therefore you are going to pay me to do it. :)

It's just like COntinuing Education. If you take a class and the company reimburses you, you are bettering your skills. No need to pay you for the time you take the class as well.

Unless the company is FORCING her to take the class, then she should get paid for the tiem or get comp time off to make up for it.

It depends. Does she have a job or a career?

If it is just a job, then she should push for compensation.

If it is a career, then she should consider taking the training and not asking for compensation.

In the end, if the employer wants someone to learn it, he will get someone. Whether it is your GF or someone else, he will get someone. If she doesn't go or asks for extra compensation, then she may upset her employer. Given the economy right now, employers may be able to take advantage.

Your girlfriend would be stupid to push it right now. Just take the class. Its being paid for that's enough.

If her boss is paying for it, I wouldn't push it. She might be able to push for a raise or something once she demonstrates that she knows QuickBooks? Any additional skills that help you do your current job better may be worth something....
