if your mouse suits you fine....why get one? but, if you want cutting edge, sure...splurge on one. the intellimouse explorer 3.0. skip the wireless though. it is a bit heavy and feels different from the cord version.

btw, why did u wanna get a new mouse? any particular reason? that might help us help you.

I don't think you would notice a difference. If yopu have a good mouse I don't think anything could really roll much smoother.

Go for it. I hate using balled mices now. They're so... sticky and when you pick the mpouse up slghtly the cursor moves... Optical does make a big difference, especially if you are a gamer or do really precise work like CAD stuff.

no CAD or anything, it is for home use. the reason i asked is because of all the hot deals for them and my mouse at home kinda does that "jump" thing where it feels like i am rolling over something. i have cleaned it out a few times and it does it a little bit still and gets bad really quickly. they aren't too expensive so i thought i might just pick one up.

in that case pyonir, you might as well. now is a good time cuz BB is have rebates on MS mice. They have a cheapo basic mouse with 3 buttons, but with the new laser tech in it for $10 after rebate. In fact, I think it is $10 across the board for their MS mice.

go get one today.

I've seen far too many people throw perfectly good mice away. They take the ball out, wash it, replace the ball, and say it still sticks. This occurs so often, it is becoming a pet peeve of mine. I just want to make sure you clean them properly. Do you scrape ALL the gunk off the rollers or just wash the ball? Did you wash the body oils and dust off of the mouse surface? Do you wash your arm before using the mouse (the part of the wrist/arm that deposits the oils onto your mouse surface)?

I've never known anyone to complain about sticky mice after following all those steps.

Of course if you have the money to spend, optical mice can be nice.

I switched to an Intellimouse Optical about a year ago, and can't imagine using anything else. I was on my brother's computer a month or so ago and had to quit because his mouse was driving me crazy. Is there a point to using a fast, powerful computer and yet continuing to use a crappy ball mouse? He seems to think so, or else he's just cheap and won't spring the extra $60 for one.

heck...right now, BB is selling that explorer 3.0 mouse for $40! it is retail $50 at BB and i think the MSRP is something like 60-70 dollars.

you picked a helluva time to decide to get a new mouse. ;)

tell me when you are thinking about getting a new vid card too. :)

A properly cleaned ball mouse will always have higher resolution and continuity than an optical mouse.

Playing an FPS with an ptical mouse is a nightmare.

I've got one and I don't notice a *huge* difference and I do a lot of Graphics design and some CS...

The new mouse toy I'm looking for is a vibrating mouse

I don't really agree with you there - I played Max Payne with my Logitech iFeel optical mouse and it was just fine - I guess it may be different in a multiplayer environment, though.
I was thinking of getting a separate optical mouse for work - the generic IBM mouse they gave me here is suck. You all may have just convinced me to go for it. I had to clean out my friends' old ball mouse yesterday, needed a tweezers to scrape all that crap off the rollers - they had never cleaned the rollers in three years....yuck :disgust:

I'm thinking this afternoon I'll head to BestBuy and get one of those WheelMouse Optical's they have for $10 AR. Can't hardly go wrong for that kind of money.

-Very stupid uninformed statement

Most optical mice have higher resolution that traditional xy mice - That is a true statement

Go for it
one of the best investments you can make ( especially if you're a snacker) ;)

i always clean the gunk of the rollers...and the ball. i have not cleaned my pad but i wouldn't believe it is from body oils. would that cause it to feel like i am rolling over small pebbles. i could give it a good cleaning and all that but i think that the optical just sounds like too good of a thing to pass up. :D

lol. ok....their site has different prices and the $10 was only for one mouse. I am pretty sure they had it for all their MS mice though when i went yesterday to the BB here in Austin. so dont flame me if it is wrong. this is your warning! lol :p

someone wanna call them to check? seems like a few ppl are going down there.

For gaming, I'd have to say the ball mouse is better.

I'm a hardcore FPS player and have a Logitech USB Mouseman with Wheel. Initially, I was bent on replacing it and going with optical. I waited for the second and third generation opticals to come out, so that the kinks were worked out and I could possibly game with it. So, when the dual optical hit the shelves, I immediately picked it up.

My first impression was: my USB Mouseman will be collecting dust. The dual optical could do the "flick" necessary in FPS games, so I was ultra impressed. Then, after playing for a bit, I found that there are certain movements that just didn't come out as well, compared to my ball mouse.

I went through changing the surface of the mousepad for the optical, along with getting the mouse "skatez" and it still doesn't solve the movement issues I am having. In the end, I have both on my computer: dual for desktop, ball mouse and everglide surface for games. This really pisses me off that I can't use the optical for my FPS games, but if I wanted to stay at the top with my score, it was the only option I had.

I'm just glad I don't have to clean out any mouse innards anymore.

Also, the extra buttons on the Intellimouse Explorer are very useful in web browsing and for reloading quickly in CS. :)
