My sister just bought a certified 2001 Nissan Xterra with 38K miles. The warranty covers the engine and transmission for 3 more years or 100K miles. The dealer is trying to sell her an extended warranty that would add another year for the transmission and engine (4 years now), plus it would cover everything else (bumper to bumper) like AC, brakes, electrical, etc. This packeage costs 1800 bucks...so figure is like 500 a year. Is this a good idea?

I would pass. It only covers things that break under normal conditions. So the brake pads would nt be covered, neither would shocks. And if the car is well maintained you should have very few problems with most Jap and american cars.
