I want to get new satellite service, and my options are pretty much DirecTV or Dish Network. I don't like sports at all, so thats a non issue to me. I do however am interested in High Def programming and would like to get a High def DVR receiver for as cheap as possible.

Also, DirecTV does not offer local channels in my area, and I really like watching the news, etc.

cable is not an option - all that is offered is crappy 60 channel digital, for more than what satellite costs.

what should i get?

There isn't really all that much difference between the two. Go with dish if you want the locals

my vote is for dish, but I biffed it and voted for directv.

dish doesn't have football, but that doesn't matter to you since you don't need sports. I get all my local channels included for free.

If you have frontier for a phone provider, you can get a phone/internet/tv deal for ~$100/mo that hooks you up with everything. saves about $30/mo, for me at least.

The problem last time I looked was the HD DVR for satellite costs alot more then what the cable one here was, we are talking over a thousand $.

Then again the cable has around the same if not more channels then satellite.

But since you got crappy cable try dish network, DirecTV was great but they are going downhill fast last few years.
