What is a cooler system to you?

360 is cheap now(200 bucks) and i might look into hacking it. I like sports games and stuff on the xbox controller. they also have GH3 and rock band and JRPG's comin out. Plus Final fantasy XIII is comin out for both systems so it doesnt matter.

The PS3 i think has much more power though. You can install linux if you like. You can use 3rd party hard drives like WD or seagate. I think its just a better ststem with less chance of failing(RROD). But its also double the price.

My final Quesiton is about the 360 hard drive. Is there any way to use your own HD or do u have to use theirs? 60 bucks for a used 20 gig HD is ridiculous. Im willing to try any workaround (even a HD attached via USB.

Any thoughts will help

Also id like to know if the 200 dollar xbox is any crappier than the more expensive ones. It has to be at leats a little different beacause it says it cant play origional xbox games. (could this be because of the hard drive?)

Read the sticky FAQ for answers.

The real price is $260+ since you must use the DRM-protected hard drives from MS. You also need to wait a bit if you want a Jasper unit with the cooler, more reliable 65nm graphics chip that will be out soon.

The PS3 has not been shown to be more powerful yet, and so far on cross platform games it's equal at best. Its main selling points are reliability (<2% failure rate vs. alleged 10% for the current Falcon 360) and blu-ray (very nice if you have a HDTV).

Games libraries are good on both systems, a lot of the 360's extra titles are now 1-2 years old with not many people playing the multiplayer ones any more.

Multiplayer is better on 360 since there are 2:1 players and Live is better than PSN, but you pay $40 a year for Live, vs. free PSN.

I'd say:
- if you don't care about blu-ray then the 360 is the clear leader, but get the 60 GB now or in an xmas bundle with game(s) and hopefully the Jasper motherboard.
- if you have a HDTV and like the idea of 6x the pixels of DVD, consider the PS3 and a Netflix subscription (they carry almost every US blu-ray disc)

To me, there really is no reason to get the cheapest 360. It has no hardrive or wireless controllers. You can't get the full functionality out of the system. You have to use the expensive ass harddrive for the 360.

Also modding wouldn't be a good idea on the Xbox, you have a high risk of getting banned from xbox live unless you don't plan to play much online or have DLC for your games.

Ok so in order to even compare the PS3 and the $200 Arcade version of the 360 you would have to look at the peripherals that you may need to add to the 360.

First and foremost a HDD. This little piece of equipment is around a hundred bucks if you want to get any sort of storage capacity. Now you are up to the price of the premium which includes the wireless controller and Component cables. Now if you need a wireless adapter this could run you up to another hundred bucks bringing the price to the equivalent of a PS3.

The decision really lies with you and what sort of games you like to play. Do you like to play online? Do you like shooters? Do you want to be able to watch BD? Both systems are great and can't go wrong either way. Just steer clear of the Arcade version as it will more than likely cost you more in the long run.

The controllers that come with the 360 Arcade are wireless.

Correct the risk/reward factor for modding the 360 is not the same as it was with the original Xbox. It's a bigger PITA and you don't really add any functionality beyond playing copied/pirated games.

Ignoring the modding and desire to run linux, 360 hands down.

If you want to tinker, get an old car.

I dont really need the Hard drive, what function does it have other than to play xboxlive? I can go without it and hopefully someone will come up with a way to use 3rd party hard drives. I dont really care about online gaming, im mainly buying it to play copied versions of madden, ncaa football, and a few jap RPG's. Im not huge into playing games online except for on the computer.

the arcade comes with a wireless controller, i have an extra hdmi cable that i can use, i dont need wireless networking, my only real concern is that i want to make sure i get the one with the new chip. someone mentioned falcon chips? i thought some new 360's ship with them so possibly i will get a new one?

Also one final question.... If my system is gonna break and get the RROD does it happen within the first 3 months or once i get past that point am i pretty much set?

thanks guys

The price difference isn't all that significant when you consider the cost of games. I mean, $300 vs $400 is 25%, but when you add in 10 games it's $900 vs $1000. If you buy your games, which you apparently don't intend to do.

On the other hand, a lot of games have come out on the 360 before their PS3 counterparts, so the used 360 game is usually cheaper than the used PS3 game.

On the other hand, the PS3 also has Blu-ray, which is worth the extra $100. Linux... not so much.

Xbox Live costs money. PSN is free.

In the end, I'd pick the system with the controller you prefer. That's a key factor for me. I have both, and I just can't force myself to like an inferior controller.

If you don't have a controller preference, I'd go with the 360 for the better game selection.

if you haven't noticed, he isn't interested in buying games.

I'm also debating a ps3 vs xbox360 and I honestly think the arcade version isn't worth it. Get a different version. Btw, mugs does have a good point in general for anyone considering the systeme; the upfront cost may seem big (although what you get is markedly different for both consoles, but that is part of how they are pitched), but after so many games it becomes narrower.

You might as well forget about modding a newer system unless you get old stock, or want to go through the trouble of buying other drives because the newer ones aren't modifiable(yet).

Text this would be a better place to ask about modding. If you ask anymore about modding, this thread is going to get locked.
