Should I get an IBM certified T43/2 used Thinkpad or not ?

Currently I have an R50e which I really like except for the weight&material(due to it being made out of ABS) vs the T series, but my hands are etching for some composite material goodness(especially after checking out my friends T42) 😀, and I was checking out IBM's certified Thinkpads link
And I can see that I can get a T42/3 for a couple of hundred dollar difference. Would any body give me his / her opinion on the certified Thinkpads , I am kind of in a gray area here, about if I might be missing something here.

I know that the T43/2 they have on that page don't have any security features but that 's fine with me, last time I checked I didn't have top secret files on my laptop 😉.

I would appreciate it if anyone here that bought certified Thinkpads before would give me some input too 😉

Have you tried http://forum.thinkpads.com?

Since you have the laptop already, I don't see it being worth the hassle as I didn't mind the the R52 I reviewed all too much. But if you can get a buyer for your lappy and jump on one of those, feel free 🙂 One downside tho: lack of warranty. I think you can buy up to a 1 yer warranty, but that's it.

Thinkpads are very well built, but problems do happen and I know I would prefer a good warranty 🙂

Man I am still unsure if I am making the right move or not , but a T42 of the exact specs as my R50e for a $ 100 difference from my R50e is very tempting indeed. I just have this slight insecurity concerning it being used, but oh well, if I can find someone that will buy my R50e for $ 800 I am opting for either a T43 or a T42 (I'll have to compare more closely 😉 ). So that being said, is the difference in warranty the only problem here fbrd ? After all my R50e has about 6 months of warranty left on it so I don't think I am downgrading here 😉

Sounds like a reasonable deal to me, but closeup :camera:s would be appreciated 😉

And also if you can PM me info concerning the serial # and some extra info so I can verify the warranty's standing and see more detail concerning the extra hardware it comes with.

Tired of the R50e already!!!! 🙂

My advice.... You have 6 months warranty left on the R50e... In February, Lenovo ships (might announce late Jan) the New T series and R series - as well X if I believe them. Oh... I get this info from 1. Lenovo 2. Intel processor roadmap - every vendor will be introducing dual core Inte laptops in February.

Also, Even if the T42/43 doesn't have the fingerprint scanner..... it does have the chip and will run the the Client Security Solution software..... Though since August, the new verion included an emulator so that you can now run it on older/existing models that didn't/don't ship with the chip.... So in Theory, you could use the software on your R50e which doesn't have the chip in it. - with out the biometrics it still allows for single signon passphrase usage..... I digress.

So, my advice.... Hang onto the R50e until the new ThinkPads ship.

Why?

1. Warranty left on R50e
2. Better deal on certified used at that point, and you'll be able to upgrade to a faster machine in a T42/43 at that point.
3. Saving a bit more will buy you even more then.

We all love new toys......

And in other news.... My T43P got adware on it and now even a trojan............ Rescue and Recovery is going to sae my AS* this coming week when I have time to deal with it.

Well I was thinking kind of in the opposite direction, I was thinking that the more I wait the more my R50e's value drops right ? Once they announce the new ones, my R50e will lose alot of value as compared to how much I will be getting for it right now.
But I guess the certified ones will lose alot of value too, and perhaps I will be able to afford a new T43 at that point or maybe something better. And to be honest, I love the performance of the R50e and I would still recommend it for users who want a Thinkpad without breaking the bank, but since I can now afford a T series Thinkpad, then By God I will 😉

I don't care how things go all I care about is the following :

1- I get a fairly new T series Thinkpad (T42 and up).
2-I would prefer it new with the stock warranty (1 year) / Used with a 2 year warranty, and must be from a trusted company or source / Certified with a good 1 year warranty.
3- I don't want to pay anything more than $ 300 (might be less or a little bit more depending on the options) after selling my R50e.
4- I really don't care about the security features, I am better off without them but I wouldn't mind getting them for a really low price or free.
5- And as a matter of fact, I wish I could just get the Thinkpad without a harddrive and without an OS because I do have a spare harddrive and I am going to install Fedora Core on it so it wouldn't make a difference to me.
6- I prefer getting the Thinkpad with a minimal amount of memory in it so I can load it on my own

I am hoping also to get the T43 with the Intel GMA900 , eventhough I am an ATI guy, but the Intel graphics works nice in Linux, But I have heared that the ATI drives have been reverse engineered and are working, so don't know about that?

Is there some secret to finding out the screen resolution on these laptops? IBM has the *worst* websites ever. I don't care so much if it's 14.1 or 15.0 but rather if it's XGA, UXGA, etc.

edit: I agree with you -- If you want to get a different model, I'd sell now rather than later.
