If you're building a new system right now, & aren't afraid to overclock the hell out of something, a Pentium 4 is pretty much the only way to go.

Anand's article in CPU magazine this month suggested upgrading to a xp 17 or 1800 now, which would tide you over till the next amd product is released, or maybe even till the hammer series comes out. At least I think that's what he said...don't quite remember :). Anyone else see that mag?

Do you already have a capable of accepting this CPU system? if yes, get an Athlon XP for sure if you don't already have one.

If you are building a new system, get an AthlonXP.

pretty much by all means get an AthlonXP.. :)

I am in a short time. But then my forum name would mean nothing, but its mildly humerous i guess. Not to hijack the thread but is it known if the Tbreds will fit and WORK in current XP boards? I am leaning towards the Gigabyte GA-7VRXP. :)

I just bought that board and an xp1800 today. Too bad I can't use it cuz the damn psu I got was DOA!! Bastards :|

Yeah. You just gotta suck it up and buy something. Any time you buy electronics in general, you have to buy it knowing that you got the best deal you could at THAT time. If you keep waiting for the next best thing, you'll be stuck on that 75MHz Packard Bell forever.

I have built several AthlonXP computers for customers over the last 6 months and I am truely impressed.This is the best chip AMD has come out with in a long time. I build them with DDR pc2100 so far. PC2600 DDR 333 is out now, but I am not ready to jump to that platform quite yet. MSI and ASUS and ABIT and TYAN all have good Athlon XP mobos. All That I build have DVD and CD/RW and some have Raid 0+1, so i equip them with a minimum of 350 wat PS and some at 430. perormance sweet spot cost/performance wise is with a 1700+ or 1800+. The damn things are blazing fast. Hook up with XP Pro and you got the best of both worlds, hardware and OS to take advantage of it.

For a desktop system its worth the investment now. What comes out in the future will not be for consumers right away(IMHO) and will be pricey. I am looking at going with a TYAN Tiger Dual AthlonMP that has AGP 4x and 2 64 bit card slots and 4 PCI 32 bit card slots. That should provide some performance advantages, but I haven't figured out whatto put in those 64 bit slots yet. Matbe a scci card or something. New technology takes a while to catch up to manufacturer and consumer acceptance.

Wait a few weeks. AMD is about to introduce several new procs, among which the new MPs with higher FSB. They announced that they will drop the prices of the other processors a lot once those are released.
