Should I get an AMD X2?

Here is my situation. Have an Intel Prescott 560, 2 gb OCZ DDR2, ASUS motherboard and EVGA 7800GTX. Perfectly capable of gaming, BUT slow as hell when I encode or multitask. So, really, I don't need a new AMD motherboard, X2 dual core cpu and DDR memory, now, do I? After all, the 939 AMD socket is about to be replaced and I'll just be stuck with yesterdays motherboard and cpu like I am now, won't I? There will be few to non cpu upgrades for X2 on this socket, right? Gaming is pretty good right now on my system. The X2 won't make that much difference at all... Right? I don't need it.

BUT, darnit, I wish I had gotten the X2 to start with... I want it, I am pissed I don't have it. Do any of my arguments in the previous paragraph hold water? Am I right in what I said about the X2?

I am not so secretly wanting to be convinced to sell my motherboard, cpu and memory and upgrade to the X2... My finger has been poised over a "add to cart" button several times for an X2/motherboard combo this week and I have resisted manfully so far.

I am ready for people to take their shots now.

i wouldn't say the skt939 is about to be replaced... what do you consider "slow as hell when you multitask or encode" what are you encoding?

Just wait t'il AMD goes DDR2 save yourself some dough and prices will be lower by then.
Your system is more than sufficient for now.

Well, AMD announced they will have a new socket in early 2006... That pretty much leaves the 939 behind. Encoding DVD to Divx, etc. slows my system down tremendously.

I know I should wait so I can use my DDR2, but the willpower has been missing in my life a lot lately. I so far have held off with that as one of my justifications.

Encoding can cripple a single-core PC.

W/my x2 I can encode at fast rates, and still play counterstrike.

Use those cash to build a cheap box and a KVW switch, encode in the cheap box and game on your main rig at the same time.

With your 7800 GTX video card, you might also consider upgrading with a new Intel dual-core based system, and re-using your DDR2 memory.
Someone needs to do a comparison review of a "low-end" AMD dual-core CPU vs. "low-end" Intel dual-core CPU, with both systems using a "high-end" single NVIDIA 7800 video card.

There is no way I'm getting a dual core low end cpu. That is precisely my problem. I get the hankering for new tech and want the best or nearly the best...

if you sell your current stuff that price difference may not be that big...a 4800 X2 would be better in every way(gaming, encoding). but i don' t know if i'd switch if i already had pretty current hardware. i'd look to see how much the price difference is with selling your old stuff.
