I currently have p4 2.66 presscot oc'd to 3.2ghz with 1gig ocz platinum mem.
Looking to get a chrismast present for myself and thinking about getting a new system.

I want to get the new dual core proc, but I cant decide wether to get amd or intel.
2.0ghz amd (2x512kb cache) is priced very similar to intel 3.0ghz (2x1mb cache).

Which one of those CPU is faster and more overclockable ?

Which motherboard should I get with either one of them ? (no more than $150)

Thx

Check almost every thread here.... AMD Opteron 165 or 170 or X2 3800+, no contest.

They are faster than Intel, run cooler than Intel, OC better than Intel, and don't require water cooling to get a decent OC.

And I have 3 different motherboard on mine that I like (that are inexpensive) but my favorite is the MSI Neo4-F, $85 shipped, and OC's like a champ. The Chaintech VNF4 ultra seems OK also, but I don't know if it just the CPU, as my X2 3800 could barely do 2500, and the Opteron 170 does 2600 with ease !!!

I agree definatly go with the X2, I have both an X2 and pentium-D as well, and the X2 is better at everything even at stock, is a better overclocker, doesn't have the heat issues the pentium-d does.

X2 3800+

Or Opteron 165/170 if you can find one.

With single core CPUs, you can somewhat toss a coin between Intel & AMD, since Intel is better for multitasking (HT), & AMD is better for games.

But with dual core, there's pretty much no question that AMD is the better alternative.

How do you measure this? If you're talking about MHz, you're wrong. :) My friend's 830 does 3.8GHz @1.3VCore. (No tweaks or tunings needed)

Edit: Of course we know that OC is useless.

Get the X2.

I've got a 4200+, it runs a great deal cooler than my 2.6ghz Intel, the Dual Cores kick butt, and it was a fair price. I used to swear by Intel, but this AMD with Nvidia's Nforce chipset are just too good to pass up.

If you're looking for a Dual Core, just no reason not to go AMD, Unless you're looking for an alternative to heating your home with natural gas...

you know what, after few hours of reading, I think I rather go with either venice 3000 or opteron 146 and overclock them. I am not a huge gamer, I used my computer mostly for work and multimedia stuff. The only reason why I thought of dual core was that I dont feel like upgrading to a new computer every year. So what do you guys think ?

Anyone here have a recent overclocking success story with venice 3000 ?

define multimedia though. do you watch movies, or make them? also do you do any work in 3d or photoshop? because in that case, dual core will give you a big performance boost, past any of the fastest procs out there.

but if you mean by work and multimedia that you make excel sheets and watch a few movies, theres no difference really... look around on the forums for OC succes stories, im sure there are quite a few around :)

Yea see sig for overclocking success, my chip can go higher while staying at 1.55 volts as in around 2.7 however my ram is holding me back....I figured I'd get better then this with OCZ Gold but...like they say your mileage may vary and to be honest 2.4-2.5 you are talking roughly the equivalent of a 3.8-3.9 P4 so it's way more than enough power to power through games, multimedia and the like

For every Mhz youy OC aqn AMD, you get twice performance benefit than OCing an Intel by 1Mhz.

AMD CPU's Performance scales extrememly well with Mhz

the 1.8ghz and 2ghz DC have been getting similar OC's in terms of MHz. someone around here got a 900+ mhz OC off a 1.8 DC opteron

Well, what I mean by work is mostly office stuff, and multimedia is photo editing, movies, mp3, etc etc. Lately I've been playing cs again, and just thinking about getting aoe3.

I think a venice 3000 will do just fine for me. Thx guys, I almost spend 3x for a dual core cpu that I dont need. Since cpu selected is done, how about motherboard?

I dont need no fancy 20 sata or pata controller onboard, or 4nic cards, I just need a mobo with good overclocking ability, 2gb max memory, usb2, 2sata, 2pata, 1gigE nic, and decent audio.

I havent event decided on which video card in the $200-250 range that I want to get.
How about tv card ?

The multimedia will rock on the X2, the rest will be fine on the Venice.

Hey, I've heard worse ideas.... One month's gas bill in the Northeast will cover the marginal cost of the 830.... :D
