Should I get a used ATi X1600 Pro or a new ATI HD2400 Pro

I'm not really sure how much better the X1600 pro might be.. what do you guys thing

AGP only.. if you have any other video card suggestions my price limit is ~$75.. again i won't be gaming much at all.. this is mainly just for HTPC.. used for watchingg HD-DVDs and DivX/XviD/DVD's.. and of course the basic windows programs (ie. Photoshop, MS Office 2007, Vista, and MCE)

The 1600 Pro will be a lot faster than the 2400Pro, methinks. The 2400 will be too slow for any meaningful DX10 regardless. Are these two weak cards your only choices? Whats your budget and what do you intend to use the card for?

They're both pretty bad. 1600 pro will be a little bit better on older games while 2400 pro will be better on newer games in general. if price is the same on both go with the new one.

my budget is ~$75 i dont game much but id like it to be an option.. i use this card in my htpc that outputs to a projector @ 1024x768. my radeon 9800 pro crapped out on me yesterday :-/

when one utters HTPC the HD2400PRO comes to mind

playback some x.264 @ 1024x768 and run whatever filters your CPU can handle and marvel at the PQ you get.

guess what i voted

but seriously if you have a HTPC get something of this generation that does full video decoding, like a 8400GS - 8600GTS or a 2400pro - 2600XT. these cards also eat minimal power and there are multiple silent solutions available also.

I did get a 2400Pro for now for $89 at the local tiger direct store. are the 8400gs/8600gts in my price range of around 75 dollars?

spend the extra $14 and get the 2400 pro if you're doing htpc-type apps. 2400/2600 and 8500/8600 are the only reasonable solutions when htpc are factored in, and 2400 pro is the cheapest.

Given the motion video requirement, and particularly HD, it is no contest. The HD2400 is the only option. However, as much as I hate recommending going over-budget, forking out the extra dosh ($100 total) for the more powerful HD2600 may be well spent. It sports a more advanced GPU and a 128-bit bus and the 3D performance is slightly better than a joke. Plan on DIY fan silencing though or otherwise replacing the cooler assembly -at least for Visiontek, not sure if Diamond or Sapphire models have integral fan control (assuming North America market and those being the only options). Nvidia 8000 AGP are not available yet but their HD decode is not quite as good anyway.

What brand and how's the fan?

VisionTek.. the fan looks pretty good but I really don't have any idea if it really is

edit: this fan style: http://images.tigerdirect.com/...00-Pro-V261-2400-a.JPG

Well, that's the one I have in HD2600 flavour and it was very loud. If it bothers you, adapt it to some external controller. A mobo header and SpeedFan would be ideal but in lieu of that a voltage reduction adapter cable or potentiometer are other options.

Do yourself a favor, sell something or make some extra $$$, then get something better. The 2400 is a terrible card.

yea i mean its not a big deal for me to fork over another $25.. I just don't want to do it unless its actually going to make a difference for HD playback.. its not like I game much at all (and if anything I might play Quake 2)

I don't know about Catalyst 7.11 but at least previously, adjustments to the drivers via manual registry editing have been necessary for both the 2400 and 2600, but more so the former. The shader power is definitely less but that only affects MPEG-2 decode which even at 1920x1080 40Mbps is not particularly demanding upon CPU's in general. Beyond that, the actual video processing components/capabilities appear to differ. If you like, poke about for reviews and a core comparison diagram (can't find with a quick goggle at the mo'). Perhaps there will not be a noticeable difference in video output or it depends upon the content.
