Should I get a UPS or a good Surge Protector?

I recently came to the conclusion that my hardware problems are mostly from power spikes. Everything we have that is plugged into a good surge is just fine, while stuff that isnt (Bedroom direct TV box) fries out regularly. My computer is among the second catagory.
So should I just go for a good surge protector, or should I buy a cheap UPS so I can have some extra power if the power goes out?

A decent UPS is great.

A cheap UPS will give you minimal power at best most likely, meaning if your power goes out, it will give you time to gracefully shut down the PC are let it shut down for you. You are not going to have a lot of usability with a cheap, bare minimum UPS. Though, if that is all you need (a graceful shutdown) get a good inexpensive one. This also will act as a surge protector, and many (all?) come with power regulation features, to "clean" your power and ensure that slight power spikes/dips don't affect your computer by making sure it gets a consistant, correct, amount of power. I like APC for UPSes and they have a good selector here to help you pick the size you need or want.

Heh, you must live in Florida :D
Just go grab an inexpensive UPS- I like APC, too. That'll help with power spikes, and shut your comp down in a power outtage.

The first time the power goes out while you're at your computer, you'll be glad you have a UPS.:)

Another vote for a UPS.
I have several. I keep them on my Home Theater equipment too.
They are great for those occasional 30 second power outages.
At one time I had a huge one on my TV and all my neighbors wanted to know how I was still watching
TV while they were dark.

Get a UPS.
Do not use APC's though. Mine caught on fire, luckily I was around to extinguish it. I never got another since (APC).

I though it was an isolated incident and never thought nothing of it. I just got a different brand.
I skipped the HP and Ford link. I have neither.
