Should I get a PowerMAC G5 or iMAC?

Well here is what we have:

New PowerMAC G5 w/ Dual Core Processor (no applecare): $1800

iMAC G5 refurb - as far as I can tell the same specifications but only one core and obviously not as upgradeable. $1270 w/ AppleCare (3 year warranty). And it comes with a 20" widescreen display!

Argh I can't decide! Is it worth getting the G5 just for its upgradeability? Oh and the Mightymouse! Lol.

Well personally I like to upgrade, but it depends what you will use it for.
The 20in Monitor on the iMac is sweet.

I was really delighted when I opened up my now "Old original" PowerMac G5 for the first time. It was all so easy and nice and neat in there, putting in more RAM was a piece of cake. Now if only it could support all the cool new graphics cards. ><

Well, I ended up getting the PowerMAC.

You won't believe what sold me..

Apple apparently puts some sort of coating or screen or antireflective glass in front of the G5 screen. And for whatever reason, it made it impossible to see while wearing polarized sunglasses (I almost always wear polarized prescription sunglasses during the day -- even inside -- as i'm typing this ;)

So that, and realizing what a pita it would have been to upgrade the hard drive in the iMAC, made with go with the G5.

And I can't say that I will mind having dual processors and dual displays ;)

Do you know what a MAC is? Did you know your x86 based machine probably has at least one?

Grats on the Mac :)

The Powermacs also have a faster Front Side Bus (1:2 vs. 1:3 clocking).

Between the two you mentioned, I'd choose the iMac. However, have you seen this? It's only $1,100, but highly upgradable. Tack on another $300 for a high-quality display, and maybe $100 for a bigger hard disk, and you've got an amazing system for $1,500 flat.

I used to be real light sensitive but I either got over it or got too busy too worry about it.

Now I just wear them out of habit. I am a big enough personality that I can get away with it. So I figure what the hell. Once it gets dark out I go back to my regular glasses (which I am wearing now for example).

you still are running windows and dont get apples other software. plus the looks on the G5 are nice!

There are lots of different PC cases ?P
They might look *better* than the G5 case. And with a Mac you don't get all of Windows software ;)
It would be nice if Apple made a cheapish laptop though, since 12" would be nice if it was cheap.

I was in the same boat as you a few days ago, CitizenDoug (my question thread). I took the plunge last night and went with the dual 2Ghz PowerMac. Why:
- If something happens to the monitor in the iMac, you're screwed
- Upgradability in the PowerMac
- Dual processors + faster FSB + etc. = faster
- I don't really need another monitor... though the 20" LCD could've replaced my 19" CRT ;)
- Dual display: the iMac can only mirror displays, it can't extend the desktop like the PowerMac can (I have a 17" LCD and a 19" CRT)
- PowerMac = teh s3xy

It was a little more expensive, but when you look at the advantages (for me), it makes sense. I should be getting it by the end of this month / first week of November *crosses fingers*.

That has nothing to do with both my point and the point I was responding to. Troll somewhere else. :)
