I was recently debating whether a new sound card would be worth it. I'm currently using the onboard sound from my Msi K7T Pro2. The main things I do are Watch DVDs, Play games, and listen to music. I was probaly going to get a Philips Acoustic Edge. My speakers are ACS48s.

Yeah, i'd say so. The sound coming from a soundcard will be much better in quality than the sound off the Pro2. The Phillips is a good card as well as the whole SB Live series. Both will be great with DVDs and gaming, esp. w/ EAX support from the SB Live cards in certain games.

Yea, I'd say get a new one, you could probably get an old SBLive! value for real cheap.

Buy the SBLive value OEM version you can pick these up real cheap & it will give you a big improvement over the onboard audio.

The acs48s at high volume really show the weakness of the onboard sound, if you had cheaper speakers then it probably wouldn't make a difference.

Definitely get a better card. If you watch DVDs, get one of the new SB Live 5.1s. Built in Dolby Digital decoding. The Platinum also comes with a patch-bay-type-thing that sits in a 5.25" drive bay with headphone out, 1/4" Mic/Line in, RCA in, S/PDIF (digital coax) in/out, TOSLink (optical) in/out, MIDI in/out, PLUS an IR receiver & remote control. Sweet setup. Oh yeah, it does native 48 Khz playback/recording too.

Personally, I'd flip some extra cash and go with a Santa Cruz or Accoustic Edge. Much better cards than the SBLive! stuff.
