Should I get a new sound card or use on board?

I'm going to get a 5.1 speaker system and I'm wondering if i should grab a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card for my comp. My motherboard (ASUS SK8V) has 5.1 capabilities built into the mother board. Do you guys think I should just buy the speakers and use the on board sound or get the speakers and a new sound card?

Also any recomendations on the speakers to get? Klipisch or Logitech? Any other ideas?

Also would getting a new sound card increase my cpu performance by reducing the cpu's workload?

How much do you want to spend on speakers? If you're spending $200+ on speakers, get the Audigy2. If not then onboard is probably fine.

I'm going with the $350 Klipisch 5.1 ultra's... my motherboard has soundmax which is supposed to be pretty good. I see it has the jacks for the 5.1 surround and you can select it in the control panel but will it be true 5.1 surround sound or would it just be sound from 6 channels? I think the soundmax codecs support the 5.1 surround sound. If so I might stick with the onboard.. if not i have soundblaster Audigy in my old comp or ill get the Audigy 2... opinions? anyone else have the soundmax?

My Asus K8V SE has Soundmax but I have no idea how analog output sounds. I use the SPDIF digital out with my Logitech Z680s.

If you're getting Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1, I would get Audigy 2 ZS. Those are nice speakers and Audigy 2 should compliment it very well.

DUDE, if your going to be spending $350+ on the BEST SPEAKERS YOU CAN GET-and are with the ProMedia's-then you really need to get a stand-alone sound card. None of this onboard crap. My suggestion is to get a Audigy 2 or Audigy 2 ZS Retail. Or, if you really want to test how different a separate sound card would be, is go to a BestBuy or something and buy a ZS card. If you don't notice any difference whatsoever then return it or sell it on eBay.

BTW, those speakers KICK-ASS!! I have the PM 2.1's and the ZS card.
