Should I get a jack russell terrier? (or, pick me another breed)

So, our university apartment complex just started allowing us to keep small pups and cats in our apartments.

Having grown up with dogs (we used to breed mini-collies and pugs, now have beagles), I'd really like to have one with me for my senior year of school. I'd be living with 3 other guys, all are dog lovers, in an on campus 2 story apartment townhouse building.

I know a breeder who has a bunch of jack russell purebreds for sale, and he owes me a favor and is willing to sell me one of his pups for $250, which is a steal for these guys.

Can anyone give me any other suggestions as to what would be a good dog to have primarily indoors (it gets really, really cold here in the winter, -20 or so)? I'd prefer a terrier, I've never had one before and I hear that they are very smart and if raised correctly can be very socially friendly and mellow.

Any suggestions? I tried looking at animal shelters, but all that they had tehre were large (read: gigantic) dogs, and ones wit behavioral issues, ick. Looking in the $0 - 300 range

Slightly smaller then a beagle, gets to be 15-20lbs.

I'd like something small and fairly weak for a few reasons:

First of all, it's going to be primarily indoors, I want something that will be able to fit in this enviroment while being able to go outdoors and run in the summer (in the winter he'll be going out seldomly as the cold is hazerdous and all of that).

Secondly, in the very off chance that he wigs out (again, I have been in a dog breeding family my whole life, been raised with them, I know how very, very rare it is for a well trained dog to do this), I'd like something that can be restrained. My best friend has rotweilers, and while they are beautiful and very calm, well natured bogs, if one of them wanted to kill me for whatever reason, there's nothing I'm going to be able to do to stop him. (again, I know how unlikely this is)

I've always really liked the breed, I just really want to make sure that I'm not going to be putting it in an enviroment he doesn't want to be in or isn't happy in.

The other option I have, my grandparents are involved in the greyhound rescue association which helps to save abused and retired greyhound dogs. They swear up and down that greyhounds love smaller apartments and really don't enjoy or need to do the running that they are noted for. They also swear that when they befriend you, you will never have seen a more affectionate dog.

hehe, thats how I explained what they are to my girlfriend, to which she got estatic and told me I had to get one or she was leaving me, hehe

The Jack Russel Terrier is unbelievable active - it does something almost all of the time (with the exceptions when he is in overdrive 😀 )
If you choose such a dog, be ready to exercise it alot

Get a miniature schnauzer 🙂 My parents have one and I LOVE it. They don't shed, they are small, and they are cute 😉 Because they dont shed you can let them on the couch and let them sleep on your bed without any worries of having fur everywhere.

Mini snauzer is my dog of choice, Ilove them, however, they are INCREDIBLY expensive🙁

just FYI, they are no longer called Jack Russell Terriers....they are Parson Russell Terriers now.

for my money if you want a nice dog get a Yorkie. Good attitude, friendly, and they don't shed.
