Should I get a Intel D850Gb with the onboard audio config

I am new to this, so need some advise.

I am planning to get a Intel D850GB m/b. I understand that it comes with various configuration, one of which is with the onboard audio (ADI 1885). Should I use the onboard audio (a local expert says so 🙂) or is a external card preferable..

well a lot depends on what sort of audio quality and requirements you require. If you just want something to handle sounds in windows and basic audio then intergrated sound is generally fine. If you are a gamer , or want something that runs audio great then a sperate card is a must. 🙂

If you "just want sound" - the on-board component will do.

Personally, I'd prefer going with quality PCI-stuff ... an SB Live or something like that.

Depends on what you want & how much you're willing to pay 🙂.

By the way - if you're going to buy a board, I'd recommend you'd get yourself one of the Socket 478 boards ... 🙂

If you insisted on buying an Intel motherboard, I would buy the D850MV Maryville i850 motherboard for the Pentium 4 rather than the D850GB Garibaldi, since the D850MV is a socket 478....giving you an upgrade path. There is effectively no upgrade path for the D850GB board.

I would personally recommend the ASUS P4T-E, since that is a more flexible board.

Plus, you can always use the onboard sound and decide for yourself if it's good for you or not (and then add a sound card, if you don't like it.) It's very subjective... One person may like onboard sound just fine, while another won't.
